I guess the 90's really are back. We're primed to have a Clinton back in the White House, Apple's making awful products again, and Windows 10 is as unuseably bad as Windows 3.1

I don't give a shit about thin phones to begin with, I've even got my iPhone 6 in a thick Aluminum case just so it still feels hefty enough. The only thing that I want in a phone that isn't being catered is actually having decent battery life. I'm betting that by the time that i'm in the market for a new phone, this will be phased out or there'll be another alternative to cater for the people that aren't happy with their phones.

I just happy with my current headphones, I really don't want to buy new ones.

I listen to podcasts at work and charge my phone simultaneously.
With only 1 port this seems impossible without buying something Bluetooth.

My prepared response is "FOH"

That said, I get it. Apple took a huge gamble and bought the Beats brand. This is a move to recoup and see ROI.
I'm not ready to condemn the decision yet. There will be cheap adaptors to convert the lightning connector to 1/8" which is an acceptable annoyance to the vast majority of existing user base with headphones, aux cords and docks.
Apple is banking on the strength of their brand and existing market share. The next generation of consumer is just going to deal with it, until analog connections are entirely phased out from daily life.
NSFW: show
[Analog connectivity] gives the end user free will in determining how to split, duplicate signal. Digital restrictions cant truly be imposed unless you rigidly control how data enters and leaves a device. Analog workarounds are easier to find & exploit. Even if there is generation loss, you don't need to keep buying the same thing when there's hardware failure and every backup is corrupted. Yes I still get cranky about my hdd crash & ruined backups last year :grumpy:

This. LOL.

Everyone on my news feed on Facebook has been bitching up a storm about this. I sit back and laugh. Two reasons. I already knew they were going to do this based on leaked info released several months back. Second I use my wireless Beats and that's it. I fucking HATE wired anything these days. The bluetooth works perfect on these and anyone that says it doesn't probably has a crap set up.

My car has bluetooth, so I use that in there too.

Wireless is the way of the future, just like digital music. :) Embrace it or be left behind.

Plus Apple's headphones fucking suck anyway.

Yeah, it isn't like we're in year 9 of a booming vinyl and even now cassette renaissance with bullish markets on all fronts.
OH and how could I forget those wireless stompboxes flying off the shelves here in the golden age of boutique effects  :D

Comparing wireless to digital music is dumb. I'm going out on a limb and say the only reason Apple is doing this is because ever since they bought Beats that shit has been tanking and they're trying to corner the wireless bluetooth headphones market which I'm also going to assume is going poorly because I have never heard a good review about them.

Exactly.
Compare how many hours of music are delivered in any physical format to digital... any resurgance of a physical format, regardless of how great, is a drop in the ocean.
Guitarists are still lusting over vacuum tubes, germanium and telecasters... all of which were old tech by 1960. I'm not sure we're the best group to analyse when it comes to uptake of technology.

In general I cannot see how wires have any relevance in the future for anyone not playing a guitar.

At the moment I can't really see the logic of removing the 1/8 jack from an iPhone, but since the introduction of the iPod Apple haven't made a whole lot of major fuckups when it's come to their tech and its relevance to the market. So I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt, given that this is what I would consider a pretty radical change, and figure that someone somewhere in that organisation has thought this through a lot more than I have and can see benefits that the market as a whole is likely to appreciate within a relatively short space of time.

That's because of the hipsters bro. They are revitalizing old shit.

No I agree. Maybe that's an unfavorable comparison. I still think it's the eventual future of a preferred format.

Wireless guitar pedals would most likely sell better if they had better technology but wireless setups in general for guitars are actually really popular and have been for years.

The headphone thing to me is a non issue and I think it's a good idea. Maybe I'll be the lone duck here and enjoy my new iPhone.

The performance and production side of music will be wired for generations to come due to the reliability, and demands where only the highest available quality will suffice. Wireless microphones, monitors and headphones have been around for decades and the tech execution is still dubious FME. Exceptions do apply.

Wireless will never replace wired connections entirely. They are always inferior in quality. That is how it will always be.
