Y'know, I bitched hard when they dropped the froppy drive from the original iMac in like 1996 or whenever, but it turned out they were right. It was time.

I mean, it comes off like a cash grab and all, and New Apple isn't the Apple of yore, but I suspect somewhere deep inside there's still guys who actually care about engineering new and better products and while Ives is no Jobs occasionally he's gotta listen to the boys in R&D instead of the guys involved in Fashion.

It's probably the right time to do it.

The rumour was they'd kill Bluetooth as well as the headphone jack, and that would've been a supreme shitty move, a cash grab and an epic foot bullet. They didn't. All your BT stuff still works, your BT vehicle connectivity, and adapters are available (and come with) the iDevice for the 1/8" jack.

And yet, there's still a physical bump where the camera lens is. That's the sort of shit that would've driven Steve Jobs crazy. Wires, bumps, protuberances, etc. All anathema to the Jobsian way.

I dunno, though. New Apple isn't for me. My iPhone is still an iPhone 4, my MacBook Pro is now 10 years old, and the only reason it runs OS X 10.9 instead of 10.6 was for the bitchin' Garage Band 10 update with the virtual drummers. Hell, 3ish years ago when my MBP died I paid $300 for a motherboard replacement rather than buying a new MB because their products had left me behind.

Also, as a preemptive strike against people crying about losing the adapter, just leave it plugged into your headphones. Then you magically won't lose it unless you lose your headphones, too!

My problem with the adapter is that I will 100% break it over the course of the day.
I wear headphones at work all day every day with my phone in my pocket. Given the type of labor I do, a lighting connector in my pocket is going to break.

I suspect even though it's like a micro-USB, it's built with enough reasonable strength to put up with the same punishment that your 1/8" jack could. Again, Apple is (was) known for reslilant, well engineered products that could stand the test of time. My decade old MBP still runs like a champ and that's after daily use for all that time, including several years where it went to and fro work as my work PC, too.

I've dropped it numerous times, I've yanked cords, I've dented it and mangled it and other than the webcam dying (and I think that's a software problem), it's still running just fine.

This is the exact same shit people said 18 years ago about the iMac, I know because I said alot of it. I was wrong. The froppy was dead. They did it with the optical drive in 2013, too, and after all the wailing and gnashing of teeth everyone realized that they downloaded all their shit from the Internet, anyways. You're going to hear all sorts of shits and pundits and fuckin nerds coming out and raging about it, but two years from now then 1/8" jack will be dead and you'll all be using USB earbuds, except those of us who still drink Apple Koolaid who will have to pony up for th eLIghtening versio.

Do iPhones have Bluetooth? I imagine they would - it been a while since I had an iPhone. Grt some BT headphones? I use some with my galaxy s5.

I work doing painting/construction and not having a headphone cable in the way has been nice.

I want to plug in my $8 panasonic ergofits and not worry about them getting messed up.

My problem isn't with the type of connection, it's the shape of the connector. I don't use headphones with a straight 1/8" jack for the same reason I won't use this: the pressure put on it by being in my pocket as I work will cause it to fail, if it doesn't mess up the jack first. Also, lightning connectors can be super finicky, in my experience.

More reliance on batteries is always a fail. All it does is lower the lifespan of anything (especially when they are not replaceable). I assume the headphones are going to often break and end up in a landfill.

Bluetooth is still one of the worst things I've been forced to use...constant issues with connectivity (good riddance if there is something better coming out).

Bluetooth is the worst. I'm bummed. Unless they are debuting a new tech with a different thing. I've had multiple little speaker systems, cars, stereos, all sorts of junk, and none of it syncs properly and consistently.

i'd say to just use an ipod classic or something for listening to music that you can actually store a proper amount of shit on that isn't so wide it won't fit in your pocket, but
