Petting a cat/dog releases endorphins, which could be beneficial for a negative nancy like yourself.

I have two problems with this, baring you live in the middle of nowhere:

I wish cats had to be tagged and licenced like dogs do. If you're going to have a pet, take care of it. Oftentimes if it's roaming the neighborhood, its either causing someone else grief or in danger of being hit by a car.

2.
I live in Arizona, and there are way too many things that could eat them...coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, eagles, hawks, etc. My cats are indoors only.

I don't mean to come off as self-righteous or anything, but I wouldn't want my cats pooping in someone else's yard, and it would break my heart to have them hit by a car or eaten. Or shot...some people are cruel. That said, if you live on a farm or something, semi-stray barn cats to keep the rats at bay are fine. But mine are pets as opposed to pest control.
Well, you're not coming off as self-righteous, but I think saying that a person isn't taking care of a pet if they let a cat outiside is more than a little borderline libelous.

Obviously, it depends on the situation. I wasn't suggesting that everyone let their cats out all the time under any circumstances.

I understand that people don't wanna let their cats out. I think it's kinda cruel though. :idk: :hobbes:

Oh, but I like dogs just fine. My endorphins are A-OK, though I appreciate that you worry (bats eyelashes).

I, respectfully, disagree. I believe all domesticated pets should be kept inside. Working animals are a different story. But, I feel caring and responsible pet parents keep their animals inside and have them spayed or neutered. They will be safer and healthier, no question. And, also, stink less. Cats, in particular, are some of our least domesticated pets. So, I see how one would make the argument that free roaming is essential to the nature of the beast. However, in my personal experience, I believe cats that "just have to go out" are the ones that have been allowed to do so, over and over. It's like the finicky eaters who have been fed all manner of things. My cats are raised indoors and, while sometimes curious, generally fear the outdoors. (unknown territory/sensory overload) They don't cry to be let out, or even care much for watching out the windows. They get "wild" mostly close to dinner time. (different discussion: but, we don't free feed or give them dry food, either) If your cat is going ape-shit inside, I'd venture it is because it has either become accustom to going out or you're not satisfying its instinctual needs with play.

Sorry to come off like a douche.

Relativism is the death of discourse. Equality is a social construct. Capitalist economy is key to governing the plebeian masses. Cats are awesome.

I enjoy social, fuzzy critters :hobbes:

Cats make excellent sentries for pest control duty. Well, most of them do. Some suck at it, others cant be bothered.
Fat house cats usually become jerks as they age. I know one exception to the rule who is still friendly fat, he's about 12.
But outdoor cats, straight up alley cats are cool. I know knew one around my uncle's house I call Heathcliff. He has a wide swath of turf, other cats don't want np np. Strays tend to be smart. Able to handle themselves in metropolitan areas & surrounding small towns, suburbs etc.
Long story shortened,
NSFW: show
3rd house I grew up in was early 19-aughts built and next to the last remaining farm in the area (now gone  )
It came with 2 outdoor cats, one brave and one skittish. Brave one was shorthaired, chatty alley cat, skittish was longhaired & quiet.
Called the brave one Chuck, even though she was not a boy cat.
This cat would come when called, a simple "psst" or 2 was all it took. If she was in the area, it worked. During cold weather she'd accept invitations inside & happily sleep on a mat, in a split paper bag in front of the refrigerator. The most remarkable part... she would listen when told "get in the bag". I've never known another like her.
At the time we had 2 adopted dogs from friends & family, one of which was a total brat & bully. Chuck took no shit and would swat [her] in the snout without claw anytime bratty forgot who she was dealing with.
After about 3 winters & summers, one day [Chuck] found her final resting place underneath the old man's Jeep pickup. I forget how we found out but she was about 17 & older than I was at the time. She liked being around humans & was affectionate for such an independent animal.
Called the other cat Church because he closely resembled the cat from Pet Cemetery.
It took Church about 2 years of feeding and seeing my interactions with Chuck to develop trust and rub his face on me. It was fairly obvious he had been mistreated by people, and highly likely it was at the hands of a child. He first warmed to my father, but wouldn't come inside with the dogs around. Sadly the relationship was cut short by a car, hit & run style...the high school student parking lot junction with the main road produced many heavyfooted individuals on our stretch. Still, fond memories endure.
There aren't many predators for them in the greater NYC area. Other than people :|:
I bond with many social animals the first time we meet. Beastmaster #squadgoals steez.
We enjoy snax, some snuggles & naps so getting along is easy. I tend to enjoy visiting with friends' critters as much as my friends. :joy:
