I know that sinking feeling all too well.
Last July...in fact the dubious anniversary just passed... I lost a 320gb hdd to the click of death. It had 3.5 years of notes, lyrics, tunings, reflection, unfinished songs, samples, early chronology, juvenilia & countless hours of creative work. Plus vinyl rips, obscure live bootlegs and all manner of resources. Multimedia. Ugh. Things I had been biding time & letting develop. Poof. Best laid plans laid to rest.
I was depressed for a solid 4 months, but it was an opportunity to change routine and approach. Good luck d00d.

Its the drive. I have another external HD for music and use the same enclosure. I thought that might be the issue so I swapped them and still had the issue.

The drive is making that clicking sound.

Not nearly as consequential, but the hard drive in my Xbox 360 died about a year and a half ago. The machine still worked, so I could play games and dvds, just not save anything. I lost soooo many save game files, as well as downloaded games. I got a new 500gb drive last Christmas and have since started over.
