What the f*** does go on in Turkey right now?!

I don't like Recep Tayyip Erdogan AT ALL, but this is supposed to be a democratic country which made several attempts to join the EU. Now the military is taking over and I hope all is going well for all the civilians!

At least 17 policemen died through bombing, an army helicopter was shot down, the revolting army shoots into crowds. We're talking about Turkey! What a night!

I don't think we'll ever know what happened. There are a couple of different ideas which are equally plausible, and I don't think it's in edrogan's interest that the truth ever gets out, whichever way it is.

Seems really complex.... From what I gather there seems to be kind of 3 factions vying for power in Turkey. Erdogan/AKP, Gulenist islamists, and secular military leaders. Right now the coup is painted in the media as 'secular military trying to overthrow a dictator' or 'Erdogan making a fake coup to purge secular military factions'...dunno if I believe that now. Seems like it might have come from Gulenists...although this is the line from AKP, which may or may not be propaganda. The fact that only a tiny portion of the military participated seems to give a bit a weight to the argument that it wasn't a secular force within the military and may have been Guelenists trying to start a civil war in order to get rid of both the secular military and power hungry AKP and further the islamization of Turkey.

The past 15 years of whats going on is so crazy because no one actually knows what the hell is going on. Has there ever been a point in recent history where an entire region is at war and no one can explain the actions and involvement of hugely powerful nations like the US or others in the West?
