Also, we are witnessing the end of nation states and human rights as we have only recently come to know them and the old way of doing things is not compatible.
As a result, nobody likes where we've been, but we can see it's not necessary to live that way anymore, and then on the other hand we can see that where we are going is more of the same, except for EVERYONE.
So trying to carve out a niche in what is nearly a seamless transition without much room for a power vacuum is totally understandable.
It's actually very human.

Exactly. You brought up the Charles Manson Heater Skelter thing, IM said in his post that he "didn't see things cooling down", etc. It's the same through line as the apocalyptic sets that pop up any time the calendar hits three zeros in the year... Seems like it was a fairly sensible leap to me, anyway.
Give everyone guns, fuel them with a belief that this sort of thing is inevitable and inevitably going to occur in their lifetime, and you get this sort of fucked up stuff. That's what I meant with my comment.

Well, as most people forget, there were a bunch of nerds who talked (well mostly wrote) out ideals and policy and things for a long time before actually pulling the trigger on the revolution.
Also, yes, a weird mixing pot which was full of natural resources for the (fairly forceful) taking.
