I can see it all now, this is gonna be just like last summer. You fell in love with that girl at the Fotomat, you bought forty dollars worth of fuckin' film, and you never even talked to her. You don't even own a camera.

Re: The Cute Barristas thread
That's solid advice. I'd thrown in a "I know you're at work and that this is not the time or place for it, but..." at the start.kaeth wrote:I think if you're not comfortable with just letting it go, and hoping to run into them outside of work, engage them in a way that is least intrusive, and gives them the most autonomy. "I find you very gracious and striking. Here's my contact info. Feel free to be in touch."
Personally, I would find the fact that the person was aware of the difficult situation they are putting you as a worker in to be a big plus. Speaks of their ability to put themselves in your shoes. And they don't have to answer anything at that time, if at all. Slap on a "I will leave you to your work, I'm sorry for intruding. Have a nice day" at the end. If you feel the need to address someone while they're working, something like this might work. People are different, but from my experience in retail, I'd very much appreciate this compared to the other ways I was approached.

Re: The Cute Barristas thread
I had a girl come in one time, to my place of work...about 15-20 minutes after she left, the phone rang and a coworker said it was for me. It's that girl, calling to give me her number! "Hey, I know this is strange, but I thought you were really cute and wanted to give you my number, so maybe we could hang out some time."
Another time, when a girl (who I was admittedly attracted to) was leaving, I waved and said some typical fairwell, to which she replied with a wink, and flirty smile, and was never to be seen again.

Re: The Cute Barristas thread
For what its worth, I generally didn't mind being flirted with at work when I worked a service job (many years ago). BUT I live in a relatively small town and we have a typically "midwest nice" vibe.
I have female friends in bigger cities who wouldn't mind a totally respectful interaction, but the vast majority of flirting is done in a creepy, stalky way. Also, if you read the news, there have been several reports of women being beating or killed for turning men down, for not giving their phone numbers, for not smiling, whatever. So a few dickheads/violent psychos have ruined flirting for a lot of women.
So I guess, if you can do it in a nice respectful way, go for it. If she turns you down, say no problem and walk away. Not that hard, but not often done.

Well, I'm marrying the cute barista I found.
Well she actually got the job after we started dating.
Seriously though, they're nice because they have to. But you can always make someone's day a lot better by being nice as well. Smile.

This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

But really though, as someone who has worked in coffee for over 5 years now, it's a sticky situation. I can't go anywhere without seeing people who are regulars at work. At work I'm silly and outgoing because that makes mad tips and gets me promoted and the opportunity to do cool shit like coffee tastings and tours. In real life I'm like that a little, but toned down a ton. I'll always say hi to regulars or whatever, but most I'm not to talk or chat.
And that isn't even touching the real issue, of asking on dates and stuff. I've always felt it really lame when I get asked out when I'm at work, and I've felt trapped and like I had to respond in a certain way, and I'm a big dude. It's a tough situation for the employee. Not saying it can't be done or whatever, but it is tricky.
