Losing our parents

Post by Faldoe »

My dad died this morning. He was 65. I lived with him, my stepmom, sister and her fiancee. I went to work - close by - and got a call from my stepmom that my dad wasn't breathing. I rushed home to find the paramedics working on him but they couldn't save him.

My dad and I had our ups and downs. I sometimes felt like I hated him. Sometimes I did, or thought I did. But I loved him and he was my fucking best friend. He always listened to what I had to say and when I need him, he was there.

If any of you have anything unsaid with your folks - issues to resolve - please: do not wait. Talk to them. Work it out. They're here one day - yesterday, for Mother's Day - and then gone the next.

I was lucky enough to have had those close loving moments with my father but I still feel like they weren't enough, and I could have done more to show him my love. Despite our difficulties, he always had that love for me and was there for me.

I'm very sorry man. If my dad left now I'd have a few things we should've talked about. I'll get working on that directly.

Again, I'm very sorry this happened, can't imagine what it feels like

I'm so sorry for your loss!

I appreciate this post a lot, because I've been sitting at home focusing only on my degree for the last few months, thinking that it's the only thing that matters. I will take a (much deserved and needed) break and go hang out with my folks.

Again; I'm sorry for your loss. I wish you all the best.

So sorry for your loss. My dad is nearing 70 and is in bad health, so I think about this a lot.

Wishing you peace and healing <3

I'm so sorry. Lost my mom to cancer in 2008, have not spoken to my dad in over 2 years.
He cheated on my mother.
To me that's between him and mom, but what I can't forgive is he told her as she was fighting for her life, at that point she lost the will to live.
That I can't forgive. I know I should, but can't.

I'm so sorry. :(

My dad almost died from cancer several years back and luckily he survived and has been free of it for about 4 years now. Our relationship has changed drastically. I used to hate him, but now I cherish him even if he annoys me.

Life is precious and so easy to take for granted.

You are in my thoughts and prayers sir.

Really sorry or your loss, man.

I haven't lost a parent...yet. But my dad had a serious stroke and seizure several years ago and I stood by his hospital bed while his body convulsed, unconscious. Said my goodbyes cause I thought this is "it". Terrible feeling. He's been half the man he was since, but he's still kicking for now.

Sucks to watch your parents near the end.

My dad died when I was 12 so he never got to see me do anything. Never got to meet my wife or his grandson. Don't take having parents for granted that for sure. I'll never be able to grab a beer with pops and shoot the shit.

He did leave me his Les Paul, a pair of Doc Martens, and a shitload of old punk & hardcore on vinyl, so he's slightly less of an asshole, but still.

Sorry to hear it...that sucks, Faldoe. I don't speak with my parents, and it eats me up. It's up to everyone to determine the level of shit they're willing to eat (i.e., were they abusive, do they have mental health issues, &c), but stuff like what's happened to you make me question my decision. My father in-law's cancer recently spread to his brain, so we're spending a lot of time with him because of what you're talking about.

Anyway,

Wow I'm sorry Faldoe, that's rough stuff. :(

As for my own father, ehhhh. I see him all the time, but I have absolutely zero relationship with or feelings for him. I love my mother fiercely, but father has always been a fucking brick wall. I've tried to have heart-to-hearts with him, and there's just nothing there. I thought maybe giving him a grandson would soften him a bit, but it hasn't. He's nice to my son, but still treats me like I'm furniture. It's going to be strange when he passes, because I feel like I should feel some sense of loss, but I'm also not going to fake it just for appearances.
