i think there's an ILLLLLLLLF thread about bikes on here, but i don't know anyyyyything.

just got told by a doctor that i'm technically obese. he IS going by the old school BMI, which says someone 6'4" should weigh 205 lbs, so fuck him. but i do need to drop 20-30 lbs.

my grrL loves biking, went everywhere like that in Chile, we got some bikes and are trying to move around at least once a day.

anything i should know? not going to be doing marathon styley or anything, just paths through different yareas. out here it's neat because you can go from my hood (Richmond) to as far as Oakland and do it pretty safely and scenicly.

There's dudes on here way more into biking than me, but I'd be cautioning you not to go spend a heap on a road bike or get something as pointless as a fixie, but there are some moderately priced "general purpose" cruiser sort of bikes out there. Talk to a bike store goob, let them know you're just thinking about getting into it and see what they recommend. Once you find something you like, if it's too expensive then, just hunt one down used on the cheap.

I kinda wanna get a Bmx now so I can embarrass my kids.

Ben I know you text me, just didn't get a chance to respond yet. Sorry man!

So here's the thing. I'm 5'8 and I sit normal at 200 or 205. When I'm that weight I'm around 10-11% bodyfat, which is healthy.

Right now, I'm at 188 and about 7% bodyfat.

You doctor is a moron like most doctors. The BMI charting was invented in the 30's I believe and has never been updated. It's idiotic.

It does not take into account many important factors. You bone density, your muscle mass, water weight, visceral fat...etc. It's literally the laziest fucking way for a doctor to work, yet they all do it because well, they are morons.

So what you need to do if you feel you are overweight and you can tell by simply looking in the mirror, fuck the scale and the doctor, just look, is reduce caloric intake if it's too high. First though you need to chart out what you are eating and get a general idea of how many cals your consuming. If in fact it's let's say 3000 a day, then reduce it by 500. You will lose weight.

This is of course overly simplified in it's approach but I'd need to actually sit down and write you a nutrition plan to help you further.

You could also be eating not enough. This was the case with my own wife. I wrote her a plan (for a female the cals are different) and now she's eating 5-6 times a day. She's dropped about 7 lbs in a month. Pretty damn good.

Also, keep in mind that nutrition is 80% and exercise is 20%, but you always want to shoot for 100%. That means they go hand in hand. It will work without exercise for awhile, but it's ideal for optimal results to exercise. You need some form of resistance training and I'd recommend HIIT cardio as well.

If you're looking for more of a mountain bike type of situation (you mentioned trails), Trek's a super solid brand and you can certainly find an entry level model without a ton of unnecessary bells and whistles for a decent price. Plenty of people I know love Specialized just as much. Then there are smaller (but still pretty omnipresent) brands like Surly that offer a wide range as well.

All of the aforementioned companies make good road bikes, too. I've had several friends buy Masi road bikes, which they've loved, and they're pretty badass looking to boot. I have a Salsa Casseroll, which is no longer made, but can be a great buy if you can find one used. I got mine off Craigslist in pretty much brand new condition for about $450.

I used to ride a fixed gear and miss it, so I'm probably going to buy an All-City when I move to Chicago sometime this summer.

Jwar... on the other side... any advise on gaining weight without eating red meat or mlik products?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. :) Peanut butter and jelly. Or better yet, almond butter and jelly! Seriously. Lots of cals and a good source of protein, carbs (if you use whole wheat bread) and fats.

Also, beans and rice are great. Black beans and wild rice or black rice is amazing too. But really any kind of rice is ok.

You could also do chicken, fish, and tofu (which isn't great unless you can cook well).

I rarely do red meat or dairy and have no problem putting on mass. I eat chicken, broccoli, rice, eggs, good oils (avocado, macadamia, or if I'm in pinch olive), bell peppers, mushrooms...etc.

For you, a good rule of thumb is about 1 gram of protein per lbs of bodyweight. So you could even do like 160 grams or even 200 a day and be fine. You could probably get away with 200-300 (I've gone as high as 600) grams of carbs and like 70-90 grams of fat. :)

I'd get a hybrid. Unless you're dead into biking full on racers can have a bit of a brutal posture and they are expensive as shit. City bikes are nice but not real fast and generally a bit heavier. So I like the hybrids. You can usually mount stuff to them like saddlebags and the like if you want to take work clothes or picnics gear or pocket pianos wth you.

I don't think it needs a full 30 minutes, probably more like 15-20. But delish nonetheless, and you can mess with the ingredients of the marinade quite a bit. I've had versions where it's a lot less Asian but still has maple syrup, and fucking rules for breakfast.

OHHH!!! Another good trick that burns fat is carb cycling. So keeping carbs relatively low all week, then on Saturday refeed with some carbs (stay under 800 calories at first, that way you don't fuck your metabolism by eating junk). Or just do what I do. I eat sushi, a burger and fries, or something else similar. I avoid Mexican food, chinese (God it sucks) and other really heavy shit.


You can do the same when adding on weight. Eat your normal cals all week them do two refeeds or cheat meals really for Saturday. One in the morning and one for dinner. I used to eat up to 12 pancakes, 3 pieces of center cut bacon and like 4 eggs for breakfast, then have a burger and fries for dinner! LOL!! That will make you gain weight!!!

bikes - oop! durp. meant to say we already grabbed bikes. she got a Liv Flourish cruiser, i got a hybrid Giant Cypress. i like it, lol, but man. NOT a lot of choices in XL

i don't know anything about bikes, but dooder at the awesome little store we went to recommended that one for me, supposed to be more comfortable than hardcore speed butts. a little annoyed that it was sold to us as a 21 speed, showed up as a 7. apparently that model has been 21 for 10 years, this years model they changed it. but we did a 2.5 hour mostly flat ride today, and it was super fun.

but i think we spent about $300-$350 each new. if i stay with it i might look at nicer bikes..... when i.... you know.... UNDERSTAND WHAT MAKES THEM NICER.

BMI - lol. yeah. i was aghast when this tiny older guy with a potbelly was telling me i was obese. yes, i am heavier than i should be. and i wasn't even aware thar obese was a medical term with a range, i thought it just meant Fatty Fat Gonna Die Soon Here's Your Chub Scooter.

but i am still super active, don't have health problems....... sorta made me want to fondle his blubbery middle.

Workouts/Foods - jia. i am super bad at paying attention to what i eat is made of. i'm a lazy veggie, so i don't get any meat, but what always works for me is to cut out snacks and sugary shizz completely, cut my portions a third or fourth.).... what's HIIT cardio? High Intensity Interracial Ticklins?

To make biking part of your life you really have to get used to it and prioritize it. I'm trying to make this switch now myself. Jumped in too hard with a long ride the first weekend and had groin pain for 3 days. No thanks!

Take it easy, find an errand or two you like doing on bikes and then just slowly add more. For me it started with biking to get froyo and rent a movie. Then added biking to school. Now I'm looking to add the grocery store and work, then it'll be pretty much anything as long as I can spare the time.
