I shot this image with a 65mm supermacro lens, from about 1 inch away from it. I have never been so terrified in my life trying to look through the viewfinder of my camera, and still watch the 1/2" long destroyer of worlds with my other eye.

I jumped back in terror at least 6 times before getting the shot, because I imagined it moved slightly, and suddenly flashed to images of it wrapping me in its web, and injecting me with its venom to dissolve my guts before it sucked them out like a milkshake.

Cool that you took the photo, stillterrified of spiders. Which is sorta funny bc I love octopuses, who also have 8 arms or legs (not tentacles, octopuses don't have tentacles, squids and cuttlefish do). Technically the picture on the EQD Tentacle is an arm. In my youth i wanted to be a Teuthologist.

I'm also scared of spiders. And scared of sex. At this point it's been so long I consider myself asexual, just ambivalent to the whole thing. Always felt more like a girl than a boy, or somewhere inbetween, although I like girls the best. But then again, it's all theoretical at this point, and the stuff on the inside (braaains) matters more to me than the outside.

I usually love the company of gender-atypical/queer folk, funnily enough almost every gay person I've met have been dead set on labelling me as gay, saying I'm way too effeminate to be straight. I don't really care, I'd just prefer to have the final say myself, or say nothing at all. Doesn't really matter to me who you do intimate things with as long as there's consent, don't get why people care about others business anyway.

Make art, not babies. Sex is weird. Octopodes are cute.

Hello friend, good post, i secretly think gender and sexuality are two heads of the terrible hydra of "domestication of human thought/experience" and by secretly i mean i talk about it a lot. Still always curious to hear how other people conceptualize this stuff though! Talking is fun and ideas are awesome!

Gender and sexuality are complicated things, and i personally don't believe most people fit the straighg or "cis" tags as cleanly as many people on "both sides of the issue" want to believe.

Yes, and people are beginning to accept this. Of course the conservative/fundamentalist Christians and other literal/dogmatic religious groups will most likely be the last to concede the point (if ever), because they're often cultures of repression. It's like what I mentioned earlier, the concept of bashing homosexuality to prove one's own iron-clad heterosexuality—I'd say further that everyone is always going to have thoughts and urges that blur the lines of gender and sexuality, and lots of people find that absolutely terrifying, terrifying enough to spend the rest of their lives trying to prove that it never happened.

I consider myself a straight guy, but I've ventured outside of that and am glad I did—it helped me know more about myself and other people. I also relate to women a lot more than men a good bit of the time—macho bullshit and lack of emotional openness drives me nuts. Does that make me more feminine than male? Does it matter?

The idea that certain people out there deny themselves love, friendship or consensual sex because it doesn't fit into a labeled box—that's pretty fucking sad. To further drag others into your own fear, misery and denial via laws is deplorable.

If you thought it was hard to get within an inch of a spider to photograph it, try getting the lens 1/4" away from a housefly. Must move very fast.
