I've been upset about this all day. I've tried several times to write something about it, but to be honest I'm too bummed and ashamed to come up with anything.

I find it absolutely heartbreaking to love where I'm from on a core level, but to gradually despise it more and more as time goes by. Today was a huge leap in that direction.

First and foremost, I can't stand what this does to the LGBT community. It's basically rehashing the state's worst chapter, throwing out years of progress. Slow progress, but I felt at least some progress was happening.

Secondly, my heart goes out to all of the wonderful people who still live there and are on the right side of history. I grew up with some amazing figures in Mississippi, people who helped me to be a tolerant, considerate person. You know... just the basic fucking skills that everyone should have, yet somehow so many there seem to have completely abandoned.

I often feel like shit for getting the fuck out of there as soon as I could. I'm 36 now—I left for college and haven't even remotely considered moving back. Why'd I leave? Because all throughout my adolescence, I was judged and mistreated for being different. And I'm a straight white man. I have no doubt that the shit I went through doesn't hold even the tiniest candle to the life of someone in the LGBT community or a person of color.

I know there are always bad guys in the world, but we had a little while there where things were pretty ok, am I right? Now it seems we're absolutely rife with completely evil fuckery.

Anyway, I'm completely lacking in eloquence today and emo as fuck about this shitshow.

Oh of course... and beyond the south I saw boatloads of racist shit living in Baltimore and New York. It's everywhere. That said, the south has it on lock.

Bills like this just suck, I do wish when they posted articles it was easier to find links to the actual bill language, I am always curious about how they word these laws and who they apply to. Regardless, it's a shitty move.

I was kinda thrown by that antagonistic post—I avoided the thread it originated from because it seemed like a swarm of misunderstandings. Anyway, that's another thing, so I appreciate everyone's consideration.

I just don't understand how denying someone services is ever right, or in the instance of the Pastor who created the bill "Christian".
It's super disappointing.

I also don't think questions of ideological consistency are really 'attacks', either, though.
