Played 1e, 3e, 3.5, Pathfinder, 5e, LotFP, and DCC. high school me will always have a soft spot for the 3e books, but that game was so fucking broken, and for all their attempts to fix it, 3.5 and PF kinda just wound up being more books than you could shake a sttick at. Fifth Edition is a pretty good set of ideas on a pretty firm set of rules, but it has been nearly a year since i DM'd it. My personal favorite is Dungeon Crawl Classics. Firmly set in the first edition aesthetically and conceptually, but in a d20-ish system. I like it. Plus so much fan homebrewing, which is cool. Just super tired of DMing, and everyone i know is either a noob and couldn't DM, or is insufferable munchkin shit that i want to fight.

But, yes. Play D&D. I sold all my Magic Cards, i don't mini wargame anymore, but I still have every D&D book i ever bought.

I've played 4th edition quite a bit, and have DMed a lvl 1-30 campaign. I agree that it's very difficult to find a solid group of people who work well together, show up consistently, and find the right balance of gameplay and humour. But when the stars align, it can be one of the best times you've ever had. I'm not a very social person, but when I was finally able to break out of my shell and get into it, it's more intense than any films or video games. In the span of one session, you can go from biting your nails with anxiety to doubling over in laughter to yelling out a victory cry. But on the flip-side, with the wrong group of people it can just be a 4 hour argument over rules or make-believe choices. I know people in their 30s who aren't friends anymore because of silly D&D bullshit. That said, I think it's totally worth trying out. You gotta be able to keep focus on the game and the story, but still have fun, show some humility, and when stuff goes bad in game, let it fall like water off a duck's back, and you'll be golden.

I'm going to play tonight, actually!

There was a thread about starting an online ILFD&D game a year or two back, but it never came to fruition. I think no one stepped up to be DM or something. But just putting it out there, if anyone wants to take the reigns on that, I'm totally in.

Yeah I was going to just randomly cruise around ILF and award people points for shit on some lame Hogwarts-esque type of bender, and then calculate a warrior of the year at the end, but to be honest I don't have the time/energy/patience for that shit and so much rad/lame shit happens here everyday, who the fuck can keep up with that?

Oh yes mama this sounds good. And it's as good a place to start as any for the total beginner?

It is good. Not my recommended starting place for a total beginner, but good nonetheless. LotFP is second only to DCC in terms of art, atmosphere, and enthusiasm for a schtick. Both are do-able for beginners, bit have some hyper specific and strange rules that might appeal less to new people. However, they are my favorite iterations of tabletop rpgs i have yet found.

I feel like 5e is the best beginner ruleset i have yet seen, as both a player and a DM. The rules are wonderfully streamlined in so many places. Making all advantages and disadvantages into roll two dice and take the higher/lower result makes the game so much faster, and they removed the needs for lots of tables, which i appreciated.

If you want Cthulhu black metal victorian era horror fantasy craziness though, go with LotFP tho.

My friends and I have talked about playing a lot in the last year, but it has never come to fruition. I'm skeptical of whether or not it will work, since two of my friends seem like they won't take it seriously enough to get through a game. But Lamentations of the Flame Princess looks awesome. Maybe after I get paid I'll work on getting a game night set up.

Expansions/companions to each other.
So that when you mix both packs you're never sure which one you're playing.
Must have a minimum of three full buckets before play.
