Having lived there for a while, my head's kinda exploding with all of the potential suggestions. With that in mind, I'll just spew out a few quick ones:

Cheap food faves:
Crif Dogs (go through the phone booth to DNT next door if you feel like a slightly touristy yet fairly fun experience)
Yakitori Taisho
Punjabi (Sikh cab stand with amazing yet dirt cheap vegetarian Indian food)
Funny Psychic V mentioned Vanessa's Dumpling house—I was gonna recommend this place, but it looks like it's been slightly fancified (wasn't called Vanessa's a while ago, either)
Mamoun's or Cinderella for falafel
Not so cheap but vital: Katz deli

Gear:
Main Drag Music (Williamsburg)
Ludlow Guitars

Fave sightseeing: MoMa, Whitney, Chelsea galleries, The Met, The Cloisters, The Cooper Hewitt, The Frick, Guggenheim, St. John the Divine. Ride the 6 downtown, stay on the train at the last stop (Bklyn Br/City Hall) and see the old City Hall subway station as it turns around.

Random other stuff:
Academy Records (Brooklyn)
Kinokuniya Books
Toy Tokyo

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Looks like I'll have a full itinerary no matter what!

Also, my partner's proposal has been accepted, so the trip is officially green-lit! Sounds like her school will be footing a lot of the bill as well! No idea if they'll pay for my portion or not, but all the expenses have effectively been cut in half!

Really looking forward to this trip! Every time we travel somewhere cool it's usually for a festival, so our schedule is usually booked, but this time we will have DAYS to explore and I can't wait.

Bummer time, she's only 20 (although is ten times smarter and sucessfuller than I) so we're mainly looking for all-ages events, but I feel like we still won't run out of things to do!

I'm probably gonna try to check out some gear places and bike shops when she's at the conference, does anyone happen do know any cool bike shops that specialize in track/fixed-gear shit?

Definitely gonna pick up a Tomkat pedal if I can spare the money!

Also what's the best/cheapest way to get around? I'm no stranger to the old foot-walking, but I'm not sure about cabs/buses/subway. Is uber still a thing there? I think I remember reading something about uber being cut down because it was cutting too much into the cab business.

I wish I could bring my bike, but I can't deal with the headache with this little notice.

Cheapest way to get around is by subway. $2.75 will get you wherever you need to go. If you think your going to take more than 11 rides, buy a week pass for $31. If you need help finding your way, google maps does a very good job of telling you subway directions.

If you want to bike, use citi bike. It's like $10 for a day, only catch is you have to stop at a station every 30 min or pay an additional fee. But the docks are all over the place, there are also just bike rental places. It might be cheaper to use an app like spinlister to rent someone's personal bike for a full day or week or whatever. But you're looking at around $20 a day for that.

Uber is very much still a thing here. Just watch out for the surge pricing at busy hours.

God, i miss Punjabi. Kept me fed many nights when i a poor vegan crust punk.

Also TRACKSTAR! Aside from The Devil's Gear in New Haven CT, that place was my favorite when i gave a shit about fixed gear.

Chelsea galleries got good shit. IFC's cinema has good movies usually, definitely get falafel.

Go to the Met. You can pay what you want. I usually give them $5.
Go to Moma
Go to the Whitney
Walk through Central Park.
Eat at Mission Chinese [save some $$$ to go here]
Get a coffee at Stumptown at the ace [ok, that's just my inner PDXer getting in the way].
Go to Printed Matter.

Honestly, there's so much to do. Go to galleries in SoHo. Just go for a walk. Go drive some golf balls out over chelsea pier.
