Iceland trip

Post by MrNovember »

So I'm planning a trip to Iceland with my girlfriend sometime later this year. Flights out of Toronto are supposedly dropping down to $99 in May. We're thinking of going sometime in August or September.

Probably doing some standard touristy things like exploring Reykjavik and this: icelandrovers.is (the Myths and Mysteries tour sounds really cool and a lot of the other volcano hiking and cave spelunking tours)
Also I'm really interested in Vikings and Norse Mythology so I'll be looking into somerhing pertaining to that and probably heading to Thingvellir
And I was told this place is worth checking out: kexhostel.is

Any of you fuzzbreaux have any recommendations? Music venues or stores to check while in town? Other sights or sites to see?

But also I have a friend who used to live there/is Icelandic so I can check with her and see what she says.

Was just about to make such a thread - I'm flying there on Saturday for a week. Planning on trying to see the northern lights, wife wants to hit a geothermal spa, otherwise we're going in fairly blind.

What's cool about Iceland is that it's not far from Norway

But really; get a car and drive around. Reykjavik is pretty lame, but the scenery around it is pretty freaking sweet. Eat liquorice. Drink brennivín. Have a good time!

Go to the geysers and the natural hot baths! Personally I think Icelandic girls are as pretty as they get, but that might not be an applicable thing to say in this case

That's the airline offering the $99 flights out of Toronto. You've had good experiences?

Norway is definitely high on the list to visit. Along with the rest of the Nordic countries. I just have a weird interest/connection to the Nordic culture and I want to explore it more.
Curious as to why you think Reykjavik is lame? I'm not a huge city person and we're not really planning on spending a lot of time in town, but we thought we'd do at least a day or two hitting cafes or bars and I was hoping I could try to catch some kind of music in town

Haha, no not the most applicable in my case. But geysers, hot baths, glaciers, and volcanoes are definitely part of the plan. Probably see some of that on one of the super Jeep tours if we end up taking one. I've heard that the Blue Lagoon is popular, which isn't necessarily a good thing since that could also mean busy and full of tourists.

ICELANDIC THREE WAY BRAH

I'll be able to update you with my own anecdotal experiences with Wow in a couple of months (should have written 'the shit to look at' but my boss pinged me as I was typing), but I've had a ton of friends use it (both to go to Iceland and to connect to the continent) and they all have good things to say/would recommend/etc.

I'm just saying that Reykjavik is not anything special compared to what's surrounding it. There are a couple of music stores there, but don't expect to find anything you wouldn't find in your guitar center. You might find some Pedal Projects stuff though. Their Marble verb sounds pretty awesome and as an fx loop. Random info, but I had forgotten about that pedal and now the idea sparked some GAS.

Ah yeah I fully understand that. The country and surroundings are definitely going to be the focus of the trip

They may not be from Toronto in May, :p

But yeah round trip Boston to Amsterdam was about half the price than other airlines, if you're willing to chill in Iceland for a couple of hours.

Is that a challenge to make up the rest of the bill in the airport bar? it may be.
