Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
but seriously dude listen to that NAAM clip and that Coil song and you'll be like 'ermahgerd there it is.'
Or you'll be like wow less-weeby me listens to some shite.
Coin toss.
(also even if that whole song posted prior revolves around a nicked Smiths lyric the Smiths still blow [actually 'Ask' is a pretty ok REM cover but don't tell anyone I said that])

I hear what yr hearing, I'd still wait for a better/more comprehensive demo to decide on that though.

Sort-of related only, but Thighpaulsandra from Coil is sort of active on Muffwiggler (which btw becomes harder and harder to read because of the signal to noise ratio and is quite full of morons now, which is sad as it used to be a nice place).

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Yeah I've seen posts from him there from time to time during my lurkings. His solo records are quite extraordinary, too, if you haven't heard those. He's a little too much of a proper musician for my tastes a lot of the time (what a fucking pretentious statement) and he seems to get bored easily within his own songs, but when he's on he's on.
Warning, there be *gasp* naked dudes in this jam:
(also if you've joined the Coil FB group Drew McDowell and Danny Hyde post there a bit, but again, noise-to-signal)
On topic: I keep seeing some pushback from the modular boys club. John did a good job illustrating where that can come from to some degree, but I've never really been of the mindset that "more people making more cool things" is bad for music.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
It'll be cool when the "muh sekkret club" mindset dies with modular. So many people bitching about all the new companies getting into modular like thats a bad thing at all. "Oh shit, look at all these new options I have! This is so awful!"
I didn't get John's rant at all. Is he mad that people are into modular, or that it seems like some "muh sekkret club?" It just seems like he was mad over not being into it or something.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
At the core I think it's the same complaint anyone has whenever a trendy music thing develops: like, you could have substituted 'chillwave' or 'black metal' whatever bullshit pitchfork-pushed genre you want and been all "you may have a million dollars but you don't even have one good idea." That facet's exacerbated with modular because of the way the format's constructed (lots of options, lots of ways to make the thing play itself). That doesn't mean there isn't good music that uses the format (obvi.), but there's certainly that mindset: the same potential exists for guitarists and guitar players, of course. It's the Dumble/Klon/Tone Mojo effect, but instead of nostalgia and reputation it's 3 large into a bank of VCAs and LFOs that you turn on and then proceed check your phone during the gig, you know?
But, like, Lustmord (who doesn't use modular stuff but is very much a gearhead-friendly musician) nailed this phenomenon in an interview on the Ableton website:

https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/lustmor ... s-meaning/People often ask me what equipment I have, what I use, and I'm happy to tell them, but a lot of people want to do the same thing and I say, "well no, the equipment doesn't matter, it's the ideas that matter." If you have no equipment and you have ideas, you'll do something interesting. If you have a shitload of equipment and have no ideas, you'll just do really boring shit.

Shitposting mode, engage!
I feel embarrassed for the bitter old schoolers who are so obviously jealous of the new punks. Cranky old bastards, so bored with knowing everything about old stuff that none of it is fun anymore...you've got to sort of love them and hate them, you know? So all your shit is old and all their shit is new, and it's just too damn bad, right? So get over it. Hipster kids will be sporting Patchboxes on TV soon and there's nothing you can do about it. Nyah nyah.
A lot of people tend to get pretty set in their ways past a certain point in life, and can grow a bit of arrogance along with their experience and knowledge, usually without realizing it. The 'looking down from the mountaintop' POV that comes with having been there and done that, it isn't always a good thing. This is where a person can start to lose touch with what it is to be young. Too much experience. Yes there is such a thing, and it's called getting old. It feels so great to be a noob. NOOB LIFE LOL

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I guess I just generally avoid that kind of mindset/kind of person (in both old schoolers and people who have millions of dollars with no ideas) because I think they're idiots.

Yeah but when you wind up watching/sharing bills with them it can get old. Not that I do that (gigging is for squares) but I can see John's point.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I think it's times like this I'm really happy being a complete social outcast. Even when I did shows I'd just sit in a corner with a flashlight and read a book if a band that didn't suck wasn't playing.
I guess everyone should just be suffering from extreme social anxiety?

Love the books at shows/parties club! People need to get over themselves and realize they are boring.
Modular has a pretty exclusive entry price, which sucks.
That price ks dropping, which rules.

Yeah, Doepfer has always made some cool stuff but the knobs are really not that nice. They can easily be replaced though.
