An apology alone here isn't good enough. Phil's also was a non-apology, saying "Sorry to anyone I offended, I hope you can forgive me and give me another chance." He has a track record of this behavior. He pleaded excuses like "I was really tired and said a stupid thing." Not good enough. He is displaying ignorance, which is not an excuse -- ignorance in itself is racism. Staying ignorant and inactive against racism is racism, by allowing the status quo. By letting him off the hook and forgiving him, he won't learn anything. He needs to actively try to be better, to learn, to grow from this. He doesn't deserve forgiveness until then.

Also: no matter what people say about the Confederate flag, it is a symbol of a group that tried to break away from the United States out of fear that slavery would be outlawed. It is the symbol of a country that felt one race was inherently superior and as such entitled to own people of another race. If you want to display it as a "pride and heritage" thing, that is your individual right. But it's my right to voice my displeasure over it, to tell you the true history, and I sure as HELL would never want to be associated with something that historically was flown by white supremacists 150 years ago, and is only popular now because of the KKK and Dixiecrats.
