Never listened to much of anything that Phil has done, but I thought it was pretty well known that he's a racist piece of shit? I swear I recall him spouting off bullshit involving "niggers" before (not the one incident that dude mentioned in the video iirc), and then the whole confederate flag thing (I've never met someone that seriously believes this "hurr durr southern heritage" shit that didn't hate black people, which makes sense considering why the confederacy even fucking existed), so I'm not really surprised by this.

Props to the guy in video calling him out on his bullshit, and the reasonable people in comment section. I can't believe how many idiots are claiming that "white power" is only about "preserving white culture" or that "black people are more racist than whites". Have they ever read about any white power groups, or been around black people other than spending five minutes waiting for a train or something, pissing themselves over the possibility that they'll be mugged? Yes, I know the answer to both...

There are a lot of people that believe that the Confederate flag is a southern heritage thing.

It doesn't mean that they're right, but they do exist. They just don't think very deeply about it as a symbol beyond "us" and "not you." We've had some threads on this in the past that echo the sentiment.

As far as Phil in the specific, I mean dude's been on camera saying/doing some real dumb shit for decades. Who knows how he actually feels in his heart of hearts, but if you act like a dick you have to deal with the kickback.

Yes, I know there's people that think of it just as a heritage thing (along the lines of what decomposing said in their post) when they think about/see a Confederate flag, that comment was more about how I've never personally encountered one. Everytime I've met someone that cares for it, they've been racists, which is what I was trying to say. Probably could have worded it better, or just left it out, but whatever.

But yeah, since decomposing also brought that up, I don't think Pantera or Down fans are necessarily racists, just like how I don't think Burzum fans are neo-Nazis/white nationalists. It's not the point I was trying to make with the first part, I was just saying that Phil seige heiling + shouting "white power" isn't surprising to me.

I've always dug Pantera's music, but yeah, Phil's let the racist-piece-of-shit cat out of the bag more than a few times over the years. I remember hearing back in the 90s that he would go on rants in concert spouting off about "the n*****s"

As for the confederate flag, we've been down this road before and had a pretty long thread about it, I'm sure you could find it. I'm not keen to rehash it all again.

I've never really been into a lot of metal (stoner, doom, drone and some black and post metal is about all I've ever been able to get into), and as a result, dunno much about the attitudes of metal fans about things. The guy in the video in OP said about loads of people defending Phil for being an ass hat, and obviously there's the trash in comments on youtube, but is this actually a normal thing with metal fans? I mean, most people I've known that are into metal tend to be pretty chill, and wouldn't defend this shit, but is that outside the norm or no? It's not really the subject at hand here, just something that the video has made me a bit curious about. Is it a case of a minority of assholes thinking this is acceptable, or something common within the metal scene?

I mean, metal has racists, apologists and stupid fucking fans like any other genre. It also has people who don't fall into that category. Talking about the attitude of a metal fan isn't possible, just as it isn't possible to generalise about the attitudes of fans of any particular scene. Even overtly ideological scenes have their differences, but to even assume that a genre as broad as metal could be categorised in this way is fairly naive. Sorry to single you out Swordfish.
