If/when you are ever back in CT, go to Lobster Landing in Clinton if you want to try and amazing lobster roll.

I've never made it out to Lenny's but I may have to stop there the next time I swing by Thimble Island Brewery. I am just rarely in the Brandford area.
Yeah. I have a young son, so when we are back we usually drive up to Mystic for a day. Will try and check out the Lobster Landing.
So stoked to see Thimble Island thriving. I am pretty sure they are related to someone I went to High School with.

Yeah. I went to UB in 90's. I remember being in Amy's when Ani DiFranco would stop in.

Legit! Doubt the board truly understands the level of your street cred.

I was there for five years for grad school (just moved away in May). South campus always seemed way better, but I was always teaching on North. Ani is kind of a local hero, huh? Amy's probably hasn't changed at all, judging by the state of the place, but that seems to be part of the charm.

That's the thing with street cred. It's a constant battle to make people understand how awesome and hard you are. Insert boner joke here. But Gat damn, it was/is a shitty area. And I live in Flint now, so use that for a handy reference.

Bad. It is bad.

There's a lot to say, but most of it is in the news, already. I work in Flint, and I live about a mile outside of the affected area, miraculously, so my family is good to go. What's so fascinating and revealing is the response, and whether or not this becomes an issue of governance, race, class, visibility, celebrity involvement/endorsements...it's a real potboiler, heads will roll, and it's super fucked-up.

I'm at a crossroads with my job. Next week, I expect to be offered as many as three Provost/Dean positions in this part of the state. One of them will be in Flint. So it's causing kind of a moral dilemma--do you stay in a terrible area so that you can rehabilitate it, and do good work? Or do you look after your wife and kids first and foremost? Really not sure.

Anyway, back on topic: the water in Flint, MI is not a LOCAL DELICACY.

Fun fact: Rhode Island's official state drink is coffee milk. Which is milk made with coffee syrup. Which is delicious.
http://quahog.org/factsfolklore/index.php?id=56

Also, we have clam cakes, which are really like fried clam fritters, best served with a side of clam chowder. A friend of mine did a "Clam Cake Crawl" to find the best in the state. By the end, everyone felt very, very gross.

Calamari is our state dish. Yes. You read that right.

New York System Hot Weiners. Yep, the responses to this one will be gold.

Pizza Strips... cakey bread with marina sauce spread on top and cut into long strips. Usually wrapped in wax paper, because they're wicked greasy. This clip is... a little disturbing, but that seems appropriate, somehow.

Haven Brothers - apparently the oldest still-operating mobile Diner in the US.

Del's Lemonade... it's frozen lemonade, available on almost every street corner during the summer. They typically also offer cherry or watermelon flavored versions, but the classic reigns supreme.

Johnnycakes - cornmeal pancakes... https://www.cookscountry.com/recipes/78 ... ohnnycakes

Cabinets - basically, thinner milkshakes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_cabinet

I'm sure there's more...

I imagine your wife will support you if it's meaningful work and she knows you'll be able to make a difference.

PBR gives me headaches so I haven't bought it in a while. Gansett is definitely the most delicious budget beer around.

I had that exact conversation with my brother last week. We literally talked about George Bailey. And Frank Capra, who was investigated for his ties to communism because of that movie.

Yeah. Probably deluding myself to think that I can do anything. But I'm the kind of dumbass who thinks there's something romantic about going down with the ship. Fucking Michigan.

They've been killing it with their new specialty runs, too.

There's a ton more, but so far my favorite is the Coffee Milk Stout (go figure). Gotta try the Allie's Donuts Double Chocolate Porter, too.
