Kylo was shot by Chewie, a shot that in other parts of the movie pretty much vaporized people, Han even comments on how awesome his Crossbow is.....so the fact that Kylo is standing at all is a miracle and it does level the playing field.

But what I mean by it being the point is that in these types of movies people come from out of nowhere with advanced training all the time.
Training that there is no way they could have received but they have it because they have extra force, or are "the one" (NEO!) or because they are just really good at something that nobody else can do (Chekov in the new Treks)
It's an expected part of the Genre,

Complaining that something doesn't make sense in a sci fi movie is kinda silly, just embrace it and enjoy the ride.
Which I did, movie made me feel like a kid again, don't care about plot holes or forced cameos.
And the Fact that JJ reduced his love of lens flairs made it even better since I was stuck in the front row

Suspend your disbelief for a moment, if you will, that a walking carpet shot an evil magician who just impaled his septuagenarian smuggler dad with a laser sword. amirite

Those Star Trek movies were tough to watch, huh? Good fun and all, but dayum...seared into my corneas.

Flame-cannon set to maximum shield penetration... (I said penetration; giggety)

When I first encountered C3PO and R2D2 their Laurel and Hardy influences were obvious. What struck me was robots reacting in a non robot way. With the old(er) sci-fi robots were cold logical and sometimes murdering. In Star Wars 3PO was the straight man to R2s antics. To me it was very original...

Droids.....not robots

and yeah I liked the new Treks plot holes and all, they even overtake some of the older movies (Insurrection) in some rankings.

The above summary of the Kylo/Han/Chewie battle is pretty awesome.

also: Mad props to the writers for killing off a pretty important character (even if it is a BenK homage)

To a certain extent, sure, but add to it that she knows the falcon better than han. Han offers Her a job right away....and then at the end she's the new pilot of the falcon? A few of those would have been OK, but all of them on top of becoming a great shot right away, knowing everything mechanical about everything and being able to pull off a bunch of force stuff without training makes it laughable imo. I think the writers fell in love with the character too much. It happens, Terry Goodkind is a good example of it.

I was also kinda miffed they didn't explain much about the time between the trilogies. The rebellion is still going on 30 years later and is called the resistance now? People think Han Solo and Skywalker are myths? Isn't that like thinking Led Zepplien is a myth? It wasn't THAT long ago.

I did like the Star Trek reboot, I was kinda hoping he would pull it off again

I think he pulled it off more than Not,
Star trek re-boot was different in that it ignored chronology all together.
I do to some extent understand what you are saying about Rey, but I have no issues with the character at all, it's not that much different of a career path than Luke except that he had some training.

Also: In a Multi Planet system thinking something was a legend isn't that far off, I am sure even in some remote parts of our world things that we think are commonplace are thought of as myth or legend.

Consider the source: Every movie at that level is made to make money, because movies are extraordinarily expensive to make. That is why they are full of attractive white/coffee with a lot of cream people. There's a valid complaint to be made here but I'm not sure you're making it.

Re: the other discussion
(I'll go into this saying that I hate discussing this movie like this because it's anathema to why anyone who enjoys star wars enjoys it in the first place)

The biggest problem with the film is that the pacing underscores one idea while the plot underscores another. If you rewatch A New Hope you'll realize that, start to finish, the protagonists wind up with similar competency (this, obviously, is intentional) in a wide variety of things they have no business being competent in, or so goes the complaint. The difference is that the implied timeline of A New Hope is a whole lot longer than the new film, so the milestones feel rushed.

People experience media, including film, differently now than they did 40 years ago, and slow movies tend to grate on audience expectations a lot more than fast ones. To use a good example of a film that arguably suffers from the opposite problem that TFA has, The Revenant's mid section feels a little indulgent and meandering, and you could see the audience react to it as it happened -- everyone visibly went from rapt attention to "ok, when is this going to pick back up again".

I don't think that the problem is with the plotting, particularly given the format of a trilogy, I think it's with the pacing.

interesting point on the pacing,
People don't have much patience for developing stories anymore,

All this being said I still very much enjoyed the movie, and enjoyed the mesmerized look on my Son's face though the entire thing.

Definitely. I loved the shit out of the film, and more or less refuse to look at it critically because that forces me to be an adult and detracts from the joy I got watching it.

Luke also lost a hand, was hitting on his sister and in general failed at stuff. Maybe it was the pacing, but in 2 or so hours she's the best at everything.....hell I'm not even sure why they need to find Luke at this point, Rey is obviously a jedi master lol.

I will also say....the books had far better stories in them that had far less plot holes. I think they missed a gold mine by not touching upon them

So I think what you are saying is that for Rey's training to be complete she needs to smooch on a cousin or something.

I think we will probably see more of Rey's failures in the next movie, which I can't wait for.

Yeah that's not true, actually. Luke doesn't lose his hand until the Emipre Strikes Back, but feel free to conflate things that happen in different movies to prove your point. :)
