Playstation 4 vs Xbox One

Post by t-rey »

Video game fuzzbros - seems like it's about time for me to upgrade to a new console. The thing is, I'm torn between the two, and I've not been keeping up with video game stuff over the past few years, so I'm hoping you guys could share some insight into which one may be best for me.

Right now I'm thinking the Xbox One because it can be had for cheaper, I preferred the controller last gen, and I dig Forza.

But I've been told that a lot of games run better on the PS4, and I loved the Uncharted games.

Any reason I should go one over the other at this point? Any rumored price drops or big sales over the next month or two?

Yeah, all the big sales were Black Friday times, and Microsoft dropped the price on the XBox One middle of last year.

Technically speaking, the PS4 is a more powerful console, but they are both plenty capable of playing games. Both have still had performance issues, though.
I thought I would be big into PS4, but have ended up spending more time with the xbox, because all my friends went that way.
Also, on xbox there's a neat trick to share your library with another person. But with playstation you can get PS Plus and get free games every month.
I'd say, look at the exclusives that each console is getting and who you want to play with, and decide that way.

Never really been into PC gaming outside of RTS stuff. And it certainly seems that way with the sales, I assumed that they would continue into the new year (so I could spend mah christmas cash), but was wrong about that. Looks like I can still snag a white XOne with Gears of War for 300 at Walmart - not on par with the deals a few weeks ago, but still not too shabby.

Good to hear that one is not obviously worse that the other.

There are a couple exclusives I like for both systems, and I don't spend much time (or any, if I'm honest about it) playing online, but all my buddies seem to have Xbox Ones and that game sharing thing is certainly intriguing.

The other thing - this console would actually live in the living room and double as the family room bluray player and streaming device. I assume they are both sufficient for this, but is one better/easier to use for this purpose?

One glaring flaw, at least in my eyes, is the ps4 is internal hard drive only, whereas the xb1 is external compatible.

Last gen this wasn't an issue, because you didn't HAVE to install games, and even if you chose to, they weren't that big. Also, I just swapped a new HD into my 360, because my old one died, and it was super easy.

With ps4, you can swap in bigger HDs, but it's more of an ordeal from my understanding. 360, you simply open what looks like an oversized battery door, pull the old pop in the new. And on xb1, it's external compatible, just plug and play.

When I upgrade, I'll go XB1, but I do reeaally wanna play FF7..

The hard drive thing is a good point. Especially since I already have a usb 3.0 external drive that I could use.

About FFVII though - is it a timed exclusive or will it only be released for ps4?

Hard to say...FF games have been on xbox in the past, and I hope 7 is just timed release, ps4 first, but it could well be an exclusive.

PS4 has the bigger chunk of the market. It comes down to, if you're only playing Sports and FPS games then XBone is probably for you. PS4 is great for Indies and Japanese games.

They both play every other game.

Controllers : the PS4 controller is the best. Everyone basically agrees on that one. For the previous generation, it was the opposite.

Games : I tend to prefer PS4 exclusives, Bloodborne is the big one. But it's not that clear-cut, it depends on the games you want. There are not that many big exclusives so far.

Performance : small advantage for the PS4, not necessarily always noticeable but the difference is there.

More important : if you want to do any online multiplayer stuff with people you know, try to get the same platform.

How about for a cheapo like me:
I want to put something into the guest room that can play dvds, can stream from Netflix or from my network share, and can maybe play some games.
Budget $150.
I've been thinking Xbox 360? The only reason I'm thinking that is because I have a copy of Beautiful Katamari I'd like to play.

I ended up going with the PS4, though I was open to either. The thing that did it for me was the selection of indie downloadable games. There are a ton of sweet games from smaller developers only available for the PS4 because it is extremely program/code friendly. Also, the internal hard drive is upgradable.

I have neither. Don't even have a ps3 or 360. I soured on the game industry years back but that's a story for an open letter op-ed.
Most all of my old gaming money goes to audio gear now, and stuff that holds value better/will remain usable 10 years from now.
I digress...
Now were I still on some Wizard shit...I would want both ps4 & xb1 (and PSVita & WiiU & 3DS :)* )
If I had to pick 1 it would be ps4 because Japan knows video games.
Also, xb1 (apparently) cant do 60fps which is a joke for a current gen hd gaming console.

Building a media/gaming pc is the elite option...but a ps4 will probably garner more attention if/when you have company.

I have the Xbox One and have wished many, many times that I'd gone PS4. I would just have both, but I don't play nearly as many games as I used to.

The One's OS is utter garbage. Horribly designed, difficult to navigate. They've recently released an update that improved a lot of really bad things, but I'd say it's still horsey at best.

I was pretty bummed to be so disappointed by it, as I was a huge fan of the 360 and vastly preferred it to the PS3 (I had both of those). I like the Xbox controller a lot better, always have.

I figure it can only get better, so I'll just try to be optimistic about any updates to come. That said, you probably did the right thing by getting the PS4.

Should also add that the Xbox One plays games just fine--I think my main disappointment had to do with the fact that it was marketed as much more (and the 360 succeeded in a lot of those areas).
