I hope she's nobody's kid but she definitely is. I loved all three main characters. Finn and Poe were great together. Finn and Rey were great together. Kylo and Rey are going to be awesome adversaries. I'm generally super stoked on the franchise under Disney.

Apparently Rogue One is going to be Inglorious Basterds in space which is A-Okay.

Yeah man, I though Kylo Ren was a really great character. Evil, vulnerable, conflicted (that line about being 'seduced by the light'), powerful...tough to pull all of that off in a large ensemble cast tucked into a massive popcorn-type movie. This thing was tight as a drum. Gives me some New Hope in the franchise, for sure.

Finn and Rey were strong, too, but I don't care to hear as much about what happened/happens to them as I do Kylo Ren. He's got all the angst that Anakin should have had in the prequels, and much more menace. He whines, and shit happens...Anakin whines, and shit sucks.

Qualm: in previous movies it seemed that the force is so complex and delicate that it can't possibly be learned without extensive training. Now we have someone with no training being super strong in it. Only way this makes sense is if the new person who learns the force (trying not to give anything away) is the absolute strongest force wielder of all time. Also, I thought you needed the force to use a light saber?

Other than that, loved it.
Spoilers:
NSFW: show
Yoda basically outright says that Luke was too old to properly learn the force and pretty much states that Luke's real training comes from fighting against Vader, he spend like 3 days with Yoda. Kylo isn't even a Sith and didn't finish his training, while Rey beat the shit out of like 4 guys with a staff. They both are skilled at fighting and Kylo was obviously wounded, reeling from killing his Father and finding it hard to maintain control of his powers. Rey won the fight, but it was still turned against Kylo.

But I thought the fighting looked great, it had weight to it and didn't look masturbatory like the Prequels.

Just saw the film last night. It was good fun and didn't shit on the first trilogy so that was good enough for me. I agree about the manic pacing - it could have used some breathing room (as you other dudes have said). I thought Rey was unusually believable, and Kylo Ren could be a cool character with his doubt over his choice. All in all I'll probably see it again and am pumped for the next film, hopefully not containing a Death Star.

Nah, that'll be in the third film in this run, along with Ewoks. :whateva: Pacing was indeed breakneck, and yes, it felt a bit much like a retread in plot arc, but there is something of a cyclic pattern of events in the Star Wars cinematic universe so I can let that go and appreciate the craftsmanship. Damned solid work, good heroes, great villain.

Han turned on Luke's light saber in Empire and used it to slice open the Tauntaun.

It was so good. I was overwhelmed by nostalgia for half of it. I agree that it was too fast paced. I also would not have minded if it were an hour longer. I wanted to watch it again as soon as it was over.

Kylo Ren is excellent. His temper and lack of confidence make him so unpredictable and dangerous.

Can't wait to read all the fan theories leading up to the next episode!

Force is needed to not slice one's head off when using it in fast paced combat. It's also a cultural thing for jedi.

I've never actually gone to a Cinema to rewatch a film a second time before...

Saw it Friday night and Monday morning. Would consider seeing it again. I mean, it's not like, going to be an academically regarded movie, but fuck that (also fuck academic art, but whatever). I loved it; i cried a bunch of times, i got super giddy when the X-Wings showed up to the rescue, it had all of the things the 9 year old in me wanted to see, whilst still being an engaging and enjoyable movie.
NSFW: show
And i actually loved the humor in this one, it felt like a return to the form of the original trilogy as well, which were movies with great humor and slapstick elements that kept everything from being too melodramatic. It felt like good, and enjoyable humor, as opposed to the fucking taint that was Jar Jar Binks. Kylo Ren was, as has been stated, everything prequel trilogy Anakin should have been. Angsty, immature and childish, imposing, conflicted. I am actually excited to see where he goes, as opposed to just being annoyed. Ditto for Rey and Finn.

I am genuinely confused, because i left the movie both times feeling it was pretty clear that Finn was Force Sensitive. A bunch of people on the internet and in real life seem to believe that he's not? I don't understand. Rey was great, but being immediately good with a Lightsaber paints her as less of a Luke parallel than many people seem to be positing her as. Contrarily, Finn is able to use it, but like Luke in A New Hope, not outlandishly so. Also, Kylo Ren notices him? I don't know. I like both characters a lot, and am really excited to see their trajectories, personally i think there is a lot of good story telling to be had if they are both force users coming into their own in tandem. Also the departure from the Sith seems interesting. Excited to see where that goes.

Wingnut theories i've heard are that Rey is somehow descended from/related to Obi-Wan. Apparently the scene where she holds Luke's lightsaber has the voices of Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor are saying her name. This ties in nicely with another fan-theory i've heard about the prequel trilogy that Obi-Wan and Amidala actually were having an affair. I don't know. I'm holding out that Rey is Boba Fett's female clone.

My wife and I both read a lot....but somehow different....books and we had this same discussion. She swears it was said somewhere you had to have the Force but I said I read otherwise....used the Han slicing the Taunton (or however it's spelled) argument.

Like was said, you need the Force to utilize it well enough to deflect blaster bolts....if you can't do that it's like bringing a sword into Desert Storm.
