The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

On that note: equivocation is a great tool for debates and contentious conversations. We get so focused on beating our opponent sometimes...destabilizing the whole enterprise of winning really works wonders for me when things get critical. I just address the thing head-on, be as authentic as I can about who I am, where I come from, what my biases are (and how they got to be that way), get brutally honest with others, accept their criticism of me, and let go of whatever meager authority people have assigned to me because I'm on the other side of the desk. Ultimately, that last bit doesn't mean a whole lot. The letters behind our names, or absence of those letters, has little to do with our ability to contribute. Seizing that shit is like squeezing sand--the more you clutch your authority, the weaker you become. So getting into fights where we puff ourselves up just encourages others to do the same. There's no collaboration there, and no progress--just a moment where someone wins, someone "loses," and everyone is resentful. If we can present these things as problems rather than as histories or debates, it gives people a stake in helping to find a workable solution.
Yes, absolutely. That is crucial for any a good discussion.

I think the notions of debates, especially in front of an audience is kind of problematic. It depends, of course, on the individuals involved and how they conduct themselves, and not succumb to pandering to the crowd for applause and the 'sense' of being the winner on the basis of who applauds the most. It's hard for people to have discussions - open to the other person's perspective and the willingness to be able to admit they are wrong or admit they are not fully familiar with a certain subject and thus cannot add anything further in response to that topic. Often someone will pull a factoid or argument up that I may not have an answer to because I'm not familiar with the content of that issue. It's easy to become defensive, to preserve the appearance (either to one's self or the other person) that one knows about the subject and just spew something out to try and refute the other person's claim(s) rather than just admitting they cannot comment on that.

Preach! Applause and approval are weak measures, but ones that are hard to resist when they're offered.

if you're not wise enough to say "I don't know" maybe you shouldn't say anything. :idk:

Yes. If only more people acted that way. While pulling shit out of one's ass isn't a fallacy, it's part (often unconsciously) of people's rhetorical toolkit.

Nice Shakespeare ripoff, DoS. Pithy.

You make fun of people for being inferior for every reason imaginable. You secretly move them down notches on some self-imagined human worth scale for exhibiting signs of deferring from you on some level.

You're the absolute worst of humanity and you should be ashamed. You put virgin white masks on piles of stinking offal and parade them around like a snoopy blimp. You are a no-sin-having stone-casting lying motherfucker and you need to chill the fuck out. Have a good day. :thumb:

I prefer:
The first duty of everybody in life is to realize that they're a piece of shit. Selfish and self-centered and not very good. You're willing to sacrifice 20 thousand people in another country just so you can go to a Wings concert. You sacrifice the lives of a hundred thousand Chinese female babies just so you can rent this f'ing camera and do your stupid art project. No problem! You're a piece of shit. Once you realize you're a piece of shit it's not so hard to take. Because then you don't have this feeling that you're a good person all the time. And let me tell you something, feeling that you're a good person all the time is like having a brand new car with no scratches on it. It's a real responsibility which is almost impossible to live up to. Being a piece of shit and then occasionally doing something that's good and true is a much easier place to be.

Its kinda like how hentai is so much better after you openly admit to occasionally jerking off to it and start posting it on your Facebook.

I'm down to clown with some self loathing. Goes down well with a hearty meal.
