The problem lies in the brazen attitude and the fact that everyone and their mother uses the phrase "tanking" now.
The most egregious tank job ever was when San Antonio held David Robinson out to land Tim Duncan. I'm a very very bitter Celtics fan about that one.

I agree with you emotionally, 'cause we were jobbed, but the 83 Rockets (aka the "hey we should probably do something about this because this is obvious bullshit") are probably the worst.

Fun fact: the guy that Pop fired in San Antonio to take over (i.e. coach Tim Duncan) was the same guy who got fired by the Sonics right before they drafted Kevin Durant -- Bob Hill the greatest NBA head coach that never was.

well.... now I know a fun fact and feel bad for Bob Hill,

Had to snag some 82 rockets stats - I am betting this years sixers will be much worse
And I don't see a Ralph Sampson coming up in the draft or any guarantee they will get the #1 pick anyway

I only pay attention to college hoops when I have to (i.e. March) but Ben Simmons is the name on the tip of everybody's tongue right now.

Simmons looks like a beast
and tanking gets you a better chance of getting him but not 100%
plus I have no idea how he would fit in whatever Philly thinks they are doing (drafting bigs and using scrub guards I guess)

Plus teams that draft well (warriors) seem to do it no matter where they are slotted
Teams that draft poorly can have all the Number 1s they want, it won't matter

Yeah there's some truth to that, but Golden State tanked the end of their 2012 season to keep their draft pick (which turned into Harrison Barnes), so...

True....
I guess it's the right combo of tanking and good management.

Yeah it seems to be about 40% luck and 60% management -- specifically asset manipulation/evaluation. There's a reason why guys like Daryl Morey and Danny Ainge are routinely able to make shinola out of shit while guys like Billy King will always find a way to fuck it up.

It also helps to have an owner/ownership that's willing to spend, like we saw with OKC, who blew their title chances by being a bunch of evil greedy cocksuckers and not signing James Harden to the deal he deserved.

But I don't have a lot to say on the subject or anything.

You really think Harden Durant and Westbrook would have worked long term?
Unless the NBA starts playing with 2 basketballs I don't see how the would exist together.

It was cheap and silly to let Harden go, but after watching all his defensive mishaps this year I don't think he was the missing piece for the thunder

I think their problem was not letting the team ride it out with a core of Ibaka, Durant, Harden and Westbrook for one more season, especially when you look at what they received in trade from Houston: nothing.

Also worth noting that the Thunder haven't had a season of healthy basketball from KD and Westbrook together since that trade -- something that Harden would have helped with, obviously. Now, do I think Harden's the deal breaker in a title run for OKC? Maybe, maybe not. But I think that kneecapping a squad that had just made the NBA Finals a season early was a legitimately terrible mistake.

I Understand,
And I didn't consider the extra rest he would have provided both Durant and Westbrook

I sometimes wonder if with Durant's frame he will ever really be able to stay healthy.
I always thought he would add muscle at some point but he may not be able to

Man. It's been weird seeing the east being hyper competitive and having such close games. But there also seems to be a lot of inconsistency.

Detroit blowing out Miami. Charlotte blows out Detroit and Miami. Cleveland being in first. Atlanta being 8th.

Kind of weird. Season is in its infancy. We'll see what happens post all star break.

As a Pistons fan I'm excited for Jennings to come back, if even for the season only. I can see us hanging on to him in the off season if he has a middling season considering the injury and nobody willing to take him on as a starter. Detroit's second unit could use him and Jodie Meeks back to alleviate the starters a bit more. Although the thought of Jodie Meeks, BJ, Stanley Johnson and Marcus Morris with Aaron Baynes seems like a pretty good 2nd unit to me. Then mixing Stanley in with the first unit here and there to provide the team rest.

Also. Fuck me running. The half court buzzer beater against Memphis on Wednesday was a goddamned heartbreaker. If we don't fucking crush Philly tonight I'm going to be in tears.
