Aye, it looks rad. That and the Make Noise STO are attractive as hell, and a pair of either cheaper and smaller than that Sputnik monstrosity I had going on. The Sputnik sounds GREAT though, my buddy has one. The Warps IS super cool too (yup, he has one of those as well) but would probably be best when you go to a bigger case.

Im still pretty keen on the warps tbh. Just seems super intuitive and easy to get some cooked sounds with.
Some more traditional mod sources couldn't hurt to begin I guess.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I don't think it would be a bad choice. It is a good character module, the vocoding is DOPE.
I would say keep the Sputnik too. It has Modulation onboard, the wave shaping and harmonics are great. I have a Buchla modular and I think the Sputnik sounds GOOD.
One question, if you are drawn to the Sputnik, why don't you get some LPGs? They can be VCAs, they do the percussive sounds well too.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?

Here is a riff on what you had, I think with more functionality. You have a lot of modulation options and VCAs depending on how you patch via secondary functions of some of these modules. Get some stackables and go to town.
I can also say that I have had time with everyone of these modules except the Erica and WMD Pro Out

Do you really need the MIDI module? I was thinking going MIDI as well at first, but I find saving 8HP and just using a QuNexus allows me to get cooler shit in my small rack.

Thank for the suggestions guys. Of course I'm gonna meditate on it for a little while before I do aything and really nail it.
QuNexus does seem cool, but full midi integration is something I'm pretty keen on.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
QuNexus has the tiny MIDI expander thing which would be able to take care of that for you when needed. Before I had the TRRS cable to use the separate Gate/CV1 out on the QuNexus, I was able to MIDI the QuNexus into the Moog Mother, and then send out the gate/keyboard controls from there to make it work.
Also, anyone have any experience with the Rene as the main controller for a bigger system? I'm planning my in house rack now, and I'm starting at 6U 104HP. I really like what I've seen from the Rene, but my god it takes up so much space.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Rene can do a lot of crazy shit though, I love the non linear approach it has.
You can always do something like a moskwa sequencer and a brainseed, which is what I had planned for a smaller system.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
My power is drawn to the Rene because it offers the one thing I always look for: infinite possibilities. I'm sure I could program normal step sequences as well which sure I'll probably use, but the idea of breaking out of that into who knows what with the power of math is a total boner for me.
I think my main problem is I thought 6U 104HP would be a good starting point for a larger system, but I'm already feeling the space constraints as I can only fit in like 2 VCAs and 1 Low Pass Gate (which both have mixing functions of their own).

I would have thought at 104hp, 6U would have been a grand starting point. What the hell you got in there man that you can only fit 2 vcas and 1 lpg?Strange Tales wrote:My power is drawn to the Rene because it offers the one thing I always look for: infinite possibilities. This is prior to any actual planning. Just the first go around where I let my heart pick what it wants before my brain and actual planning have to intervene.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I might still get a Yarns, but I don't care half as much about midi integration anymore, since most of my modules can be clocked by an audio signal.Ev_O))) wrote:Thank for the suggestions guys. Of course I'm gonna meditate on it for a little while before I do aything and really nail it.

A good piece of external gateway gear that has a full synth voice and puts out audio, such as a Werkstatt w/CV expander(cheapest), Roland FX(next cheapest), Mother 32, Dreadbox, Doepfer Dark Energy, etc. is a great place to start. Was for me anyway. Fast and cheap way to start having fun immediately, and gives you full freedom to start with whatever cool modules you want, like yep and warps, the kind of modules that make people take the plunge in the first place. Once you have a full synth voice or two to fuck with, bad choices are virtually impossible.
