This basically sums it.gae86 wrote:it really depends on the quality of wine. Personally I prefer red wine, but there are some dishes that just ask for a great white wine. You just have to buy wisely. You can't go wrong with gewurtztraminer, muller thurgau, a good chardonnay, or a pinot grigio. Then there are the south italy whites. So really, in the end there's only good wine and bad wine.
oh and 90% of time rosè sucks, just a reminder.

Are you sure that's not Vinmonopolet talking?UglyCasanova wrote:I've tried a bunch of times. You drink white wine (from the Alps if possible) or apple juice.
And seriously, try some good white wines. They can be awesome. Some people like them dry, some people like them sweet. I like all of them.![]()
I'd rather have a semi-dry port or something.

I don't know if it's because I'm 24 or something, but all wine tastes like fucking dumpster water to me.
I'll just go ahead and place myself on the guillotine.

Agreed with all of them except for #3. Food/wine pairing rules are utter horseshit. That's like telling me I can't use a metal distortion pedal to play dream pop. Fuck that bullshit.Disarm D'arcy wrote:Ice cubes in wine => guillotine

Horseshit. You're telling me that a Tokaji Aszu Essencia or a Château d'Yquem are "fucking disgusting"?Brandsmannen wrote:Also totally agree with UC that white wine is usually way worse + sweet wine is fucking disgusting

Re: How not to end up on a guillotine (the wine thread)
I love wine and have tried to expand my palate as much as I can, given the fact that I'm poor as fuck. The one thing I have absolutely no time for are bullshit wine snob rules. Drink what you like, and feel free to not like anything you want. But when you take your tastes and try to expand them to generalized rules to make yourself sound like an authority, fuck that bullshit.
There, I stumbled into this thread late and shat all over everything. Here's your soapbox back.

"I just don't like white wine" = totally acceptable opinion I have no problem withUglyCasanova wrote:I'm a racist fuck. I just don't like white wine. Leave me alone.bigchiefbc wrote:Utter horseshit. "white wines suck"/"only newbs/house marms drink whites"/"reds are more profound" = bullshit faux-intellectual snobbery that serves no purpose.

BC's so underrated because he never gets contentious.
I can read a thread and see that he's browsing the forum and I just envision him (as the old man Diabeetus guy or the aardvark thing, depending) going to type up some kind of glorious retort, shaking his head, and just deciding to keep his opinions to himself.
I would have bet on the STP thread, not a wine thread though.

Been drinking the heck out of these lately. My friend, big time wine guy that travels to Australia for prog and wine all the damn time (and spends 600 a weekend on wine) loves this stuff...for $14 a bottle he says that after aeration, it takes like a $40 to $60 wine (mostly in reference to the E/Spanish one). I love the Spanish one...it is very full, dry and has a good thickness.
The I/Italian one we tried last night had a bunch of different characters than the E. It is much lighter too. It went from light, to kinda fruity (hints of the French one), to more like the E (which, from what my friends says is mellow tannic or something like that). Still prefer the E, but this one was way less heavy.
The F was my least favorite that we tried...it had way more fruit overtones and is more sweet (which is the wrong word, but I am a beer and saki drinker, so don't know?).
The other two I've never seen in any of my secret shopping spots (warehouses for restaurant supply...easiest place to find pisco and my stouts). And World Market...
Anyway, when we drink the fancy expensive stuff, I will snap a picture (my friend probably has 10k worth in his wine fridge thing)...
