yeah, i love intellijel but every time they put out a v2 of something i'm like "dammit!"
i have an original MS-20. it's pretty damn close IMO.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I'm glad I started a little late in the modular game then
I received my uVCA II yesterday and it's everything I've wanted from a VCA. The bias + exp/linear pot allow me to create a ton of different sounds with my ADSR. Intellijel seems to have a huge amount of incredible useful and cool modules. I'll be looking to them a lot more once I decide to expand to a larger home studio system.

Doesn't maths have that too though?

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
To be fair, the v2 thing mostly happened once they changed the overall style of their modules (different knobs, probably more changes under the hood) a few years ago. I don't think they've updated modules released since then that way.space6oy wrote:yeah, i love intellijel but every time they put out a v2 of something i'm like "dammit!"

My Intellijel uVCF is an awesome little 6HP thing, by the way. Really nice multimode filter that doubles as an excellent sine oscillator. Super useful module.

I got a ILF-bro deal on a Blue Lantern ADSR. It was one of the first modules I bought as well.Inconuucl wrote:Doesn't maths have that too though?
Also I'm not even like 20% through figuring out the Maths.

Just got a Wasp a few weeks ago and couldn't recommend it enough. It's such a versatile filter and can get so gnarly and dirty.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I am little hesitant though because it has LP/HP out instead of just a HP out. But everyone that has said something about the WASP filter has only said good things about it, so I'll have it in the back of my head.

It's just one person (who does everything apart from panel design), so you can say "he just makes the coolest stuff", which is trueStrange Tales wrote:I think I'll own everything from MI one day. They just make the coolest stuff.
I met Olivier (Mr MI) just once at a tech/art event I used to co-organize in Paris (he did a presentation about his custom music software) and that was before he started MI but the guy is obviously both super smart and super nice. I only have a Peaks now but there are several other MI modules in my list of "stuff to get at some point in the future".

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I can personally vouch for the Clouds being an absolutely incredible piece of equipment. I recently started getting into messing with the other modes. Apparently I wasn't even using the default mode of Clouds for the longest time
I've been thinking about downloading the Parasite firmware for Clouds as well after I spend more time with what I have already.
Also that is wild that MI is a one person company. Absolutely insane but hats off to Olivier.

One man designs, the modules are subbed out to a factory of some kind. Still, very awesome work that Olivier does.Strange Tales wrote:I can personally vouch for the Clouds being an absolutely incredible piece of equipment. Not sure if people are interested/you guys need this. But here is a PDF for the newest version of Maths with a ton of patches.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I guess I'm going to have to get a Warps, people have been calling me that on the internet forever.
But I need some other stuff first. Maybe.
I like that it can be used as an oscillator or a br00tz filter, and I love the vocoder mode. I also really like the Evaton RF Nomad as a weirdo oscillator.
The criticisms I've seen of the Aira FX are all worth considering (but also all have a positive side): they're too pedally, they consume too much power in the rack, they don't bring any truly new effects or sounds to the game, and no CV out. Not very appealing to some more advanced and experienced, but for noobs coming over from pedals, they are...pretty much perfect. One gets you in and able to interact with any other kind of eurorack module, whatever you want to start with. They're made to pair with all the popular stuff. That's why there's no CV out. There is SO much of that in euro already, there's no competing with it, so they're made to compliment and work with it, and get people into it. And I love that they're so pedally and have enclosures. Europedals FTW, proud to be rocking one, might add another soon. Mother 32 is a badass europedal, and that Snazzy FX Divine Hammer too. It's a cool twist and it can drastically alter and influence all kinds of choices...

You can actually get CV outs with the Aira FX modules, I think. You just need to set it up properly with the software first.Warpsmasher wrote:The criticisms I've seen of the Aira FX are all worth considering (but also all have a positive side): they're too pedally, they consume too much power in the rack, they don't bring any truly new effects or sounds to the game, and no CV out. Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Hey guys, I got two questions.
VCA - what's the deal? what should I be looking at and considering. what does BIAS do on a VCA?
Output - are output modules necessary? I'll be plugging into a mixer (midas F32)

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Bias is usually the initial gain (i.e. volume when no other voltage is applied). As people usually say on Muffwiggler : you can never have enough VCAs. They're not only useful for audio but also for modulations, etc. Simple example : controling the amount of modulation (from an LFO for example) that is applied to something. Think : modulate the modulations, for starters.
Output modules : if you're plugging in a decent mixer, you should be ok with just the gain knob on the mixer. Output modules are useful when directly connecting to line level effects, etc. or when you want an headphones out right out of the modular...
