Also are we going to talk about how the entire argument being put forward for the Kendrick record is the marketing budget being passed off as "cultural significance" or no?

Im not really a big fan of kendrick. Im not really a big fan of rap.

How about we talk about musicians that feel the need to remind everyone they like rap all the time because theyre being featured on noisey and if they dont suck the nyc pussyboy white guiltster culturecock they wont get to play at pitchfork this year and bang all that urban outfitters gash.

When an album is being listened to and discussed across wide demographics of society, that's a surefire sign of some kind of greatness.

I mean maybe "surefire" is inaccurate, and there's a pretty wide range of music that would be listened to and discussed across wide demographics of society just with enough mainstream media push.

But on the other hand, I think it does say something if music can connect with so many people. It's like saying that Taylor Swift's songs (for ex.) are radio trash that anyone could write, when in reality they've meticulously engineered that shit to take the mainline into your pleasure receptors...obviously it doesn't work on everyone (also you could argue that this is a very bad thing that is killing music), but I think there's something to be said for writing a song that millions and millions of people love. Even if millions of those people don't really care about music and just listen to whatever is on pop radio, I think it still means something.

If that was anything approaching what I was saying I'd probably agree with you.

To run with that, the endpoint of your argument (based on the statements being put forward, at least) suggests that whatever Radio Friendly Unit Shifters are the most successful in a given year are the most culturally relevant, which would make (in the US, at least) 1989, The 20/20 Experience, 21, and Recovery the most culturally relevant records of the '10's. They speak to the most people, etc. This is not the conversation I'm having.

What I am saying is that saying this is "objective" cultural relevancy is nonsense, and that a handful of thinkpieces written by people like casecandy for people like casecandy do little to shift that needle away from the fact that Kendrick Lamar is the industry face of the next "great black rapper" in the vein of 2Pac, et. al., which determines all of his marketing. Interscope is marketing him as the next great black rapper, so whatever he says is going to be "culturally relevant" because the people promoting him as a product have a vested financial interest in making it so. Has fuck all to do with the skill involved in crafting hooky pop music.

Good list SPACERITUAL

That Gnaw Their Tongues record is one of my favourites from this year, constant rotation at this point

D.o.S., you got me all wrong. I been listening to Kendrick since his mixtape days. I'm into rap quite a bit. I'm a moderator on Genius and stuff. I didn't come to Kendrick through marketing. I think he's a great rapper because he is a great rapper, not because anyone else told me is. You listen to "Control." If that's not what a great rapper sounds like to you then I don't know about you

My favourite genres in order goes: Emo/screamo/post-hardcore/metalcore/etc. > Hip-hop/rap > Doom metal/post-metal/experimental black metal > All the other genres. I don't hate any genre on principle. In fact I make a point of seeking out music from all genres. It's part of... uh... a well-balanced breakfast or something

They started in the late 2000s I think, but put out their best albums in 2011 and last year. The one from last year is pretty much my favourite doom record, From All Purity.
