Small guitar combo for keys?

Post by tabcantab »

I'm in the market for a small guitar combo (probably 1x10/1x12), and also looking for a good way to amplify combo organ and cheapo synths, and hoping I can kill two birds with one stone. I know many people recommend bass amps for keys, and I've seen Twin Reverbs used that sound pretty good, but are there any smaller guitar combos that handle low end well enough to be useful for this?

Perfectly transparent sound isn't a requirement -- a bit of breakup is fine for the sound I'm going for. If it were just for guitar, I'd be thinking something in the Blues Jr./Deluxe Reverb/Reverberocket category. Anyone tried these with keys, with the stock speaker, or have other recommendations?

I'd look for something with a 15" speaker, but maybe that's just me. :idk:

If not, a 12" might be OK depending on the speaker itself.

Roland Cube?

Chankgeez is right though, 15" would probably be better.

Thanks for the feedback. Not many 115 combos out there (and I'd like to avoid a head/cab for this one), but the Peavey Delta Blues looks like an interesting option. Plus, I'm a sucker for tweed.

You might want to look at bass combos, as well.

Indeed. Same goes for smaller bass combos with TUBEZ. Guess there are the old Musicmasters which are nominally bass amps, but those were never great on bass anyhow.

funny you should bring those up... I was going to suggest one of those, but figured it wouldn't have enough juice.
They're definitely not good for bass in a live band context... but depending on the music can sound GREAT recorded.

Wasn't sure if that was pretty much everywhere.
it is in Toronto. I don't think I've ever played a show that wasn't mic'd. Almost annoyingly so. I used to lug around a Bassman and I never - ever - got away with having it at or above 3.
Inevitably: "uh... bro.. I'm going to have to ask you to... uh... turn it down... k, bro?"

Peavey Delta Blues 115?

That's just based on your requirements, and on the fact that those 30Watts should be enough to not completely break up at moderate volumes, and it still qualifies as a "small" amp imo.

Also, given the choice I'd definatelly go for a 15" speaker for keys.
