I saw Deerhunter open up for Daughters in 2004 and dude spit water in my face and I slapped the mic out of his hand, which hit him in the face and fell and caused a huge feedback squeal. I thought it was the best part of the show.

Since we're talking AOTY predictions, the album of the year, "objectively," is gonna be To Pimp A Butterfly.

My album of the year is Sufjan Stevens's Carrie and Lowell, or Titus Andronicus's The Most Lamentable Tragedy.

@SPACERITUAL: You recommended me that album! I just listened to it now. Do you hate me for just thinking it sounds like dubstep mixed with nü-metal? Is D.o.S.'s haterness rubbing off on me or something?

@D.o.S.: I'm listening to Lord Mantis as we speak, three songs in on Bandcamp... I didn't know they were from Chicago! Even sharing members with Indian! What is it about Chicago that breeds good sludge bands? Anyway, thoughts, first, I really like it, a lot. Heavy as fuck. Good vocals. Second, you recommended it because it might scare me. Unfortunately... I do not find it scary. I put this in the same category as Khanate, I guess, pretty standard doom that's got a lot of hype as something more than that...? Sure is angry, though! But I even feel like parts of it are a bit over the top or cheesy even. Like,
I am the raping [EDITED]
Bend to the whip of speed priest, speed priest
Child fucker pit worship
That's just sort of... gross. This is why I like Sunn and Pelican, there's no cheesy lyrics mucking things up. Anyway... good riffs. Really good riffs. It'll probably grow on me.

Must be absolutely fucking insane live, though.

P.S. Also, as I'm reading things about them, I realized you were wrong: they were on Noisey.

P.P.S. Whoa, ILF auto-edits the N-word.

P.P.P.S. Also, I did find the use of that word a little questionable in the first place.

P.P.P.P.S. Also in the Noisey interview the dude seems like one of those people who can't quite wrap their head around the whole cis/trans thing. But he's definitely not a hater. "So I just said fuck it and then blew my load in that dudes mouth. He got some young dick and I got a new perspective on the animal kingdom." Metal. *shrugs*

Starting to grow on me. "Negative Birth" is way more my speed.

EDIT: Then the second half of the song kicked in and I'm right back where I was. Is this like... death metal or something? Too fast. Too song-ish.

Pile is awesome!

Have you heard Kal Marks? I get a similar vibe from both bands.

Based on what? Cultural significance, albums sales, a bunch of stuff? I can definitely see an argument being made, but i'm pretty skeptical of objectivity in music in general. I mean music is such a personal thing-- how could an album be "objectively better" than your favorites? But music also has cultural impact so I guess that counts for something. Idk, i'm just typing things :hello:

I have heard of them (I live near Boston) but never listened or seen them. I'll check 'em out though. I've basically been listening to pile nonstop since February

I see someone never made it past the intro.

Well, please note I was being a little sarcastic about the word "objective," hence the quotation marks around the word!

But yes, cultural significance, for sure. When an album is being listened to and discussed across wide demographics of society, that's a surefire sign of some kind of greatness. People speak favourably of the album on ILF, but my 13-year-old high-school students also want to listen to it. It was, ahem, discussed on Fox News, which is very appropriate, because it gathers together a lot of different issues about race in America and says things I'd consider to be important about them. Chuck D said, "Hip-hop is black CNN," but... I dunno, I'm white and I'm thinking there's a lot more of value on TPAB than there is on CNN, these days. You've got features from Dre and George Clinton on there. It's apparent that the greats approve of it, too... and it's full of soul, funk, jazz, rock, a big confluence of genres... when was the last time you heard so many "real instruments" (fuzz pedals even) on a mainstream hip-hop record? And it's just so ambitious... who else could pull off a fake conversation with 2Pac? In a lesser musician's hands it would have been borderline offensive.
From a peasant to a prince to a motherfuckin' king.
So yeah, it wasn't my personal favourite from 2015, but it was one of them, and I'm able to recognize that it had the widest appeal, with the most cultural relevance.

Like I said, my personal favourite was Sufjan Steven's Carrie and Lowell, for very personal reasons.

False. Listened through the whole thing and going to give it a second listen today. I believe you that it's good. Just don't hear it yet.

Like I love the riffs but then the guy sings

I retract my earlier statement. It actually sounds like Rammstein.

FWIW I recommended it to you because you like Indian (allegedly), and since Mantis more or less is Indian at this point.

Is the indian you guyz are talking about the really shitty doom band from the mid 2000s or is it something else?

Sounds nothing like rammstein but ok. Maybe instead of "sounds like" what you mean is "is a band that sings in a foreign language and has vaguely nu metal riffs"
