Re: ILFSS '15 Wishlist Thread
It's bad timing to say German rides are green. But if you buy a German ride thinking it's green, you should probably question your entire reasoning.
Because ya know, however environmentally shitty my German ride is, I bought it 'cause it's fast, has excellent mileage, is relatively cheap to maintain, has all the bitchin' tech and security equipment and all and of course the 3 years warranty on a used car. And did I mention that when it craps, Volkswagen rents me a car for free and pays me a cab to go get the rental and back? Also they give me cookies and wash it and put orange scented perfume in it.
I'll put up with NOx emissions until diesel engines are banned. But FFS, 80% of cars have diesel engines in France. So it's a bit of a complicated issue.
Seriously though, Phanta, hope your car gets fixed and that the money trouble goes away. Cars are a freaking burden when they break down.

Re: ILFSS '15 Wishlist Thread
You have to factor in a few elements to understand the French's inclination for diesel engines.
We have no oil. It's all imported. Diesel gives a better average mpg. 15-20% Less energy needed. 15-20% Less imported oil needed. You have to factor that this decision was made a little over 30 years ago, less than a decade after the 1973 oil shock that caused a significant recession.
French car makers have bet everything on diesel because they were good at it. During the 1980s, the Peugeot Citroen (historic French car maker, competitor to Renault) was the only car maker that had real know how on diesel engines with Mercedes. Renault followed. Their market was the masses, companies and administrations when Peugeot aimed at the middle class and executives. Still today, Peugeot makes the finest and cleanest Diesel engines on the market.
Because Diesel engines profited French makers and required less oil, fiscal advantages were voted, to offset the higher cost of purchase of a Diesel engine car. Companies have a fiscal deduction on Diesel for the same reason.
Diesel engines were a strategic choice. And because we make public policies that work, it worked, and people bought French Diesel engines we imported less oil, we saved thousands of jobs in the automotive industry. Of course that was 20 years before we started worrying about the environment and pollutants that are not carbon dioxide (because Diesel engines are often better at carbon dioxide). Over a half of the cars here are French cars. Yep, 2 makers have half of the market when their competition is Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, Fiat, Toyota, Honda, GM... That's what I call public policies.
TLDR: at the time, diesel was smart on many accounts and public policies supporting diesel worked very well. Hence the shit we are in now.

Haha, I have no problem with the reliability of german cars (I drive a (petrol) volkswagen and it's great) I was just making a dumb joke. Sorryyyyy, didn't expect the fact check.
Interesting analysis on the diesel situation in France D'arcy. In the UK we have a similarly high prevalence of diesel cars, in a similar way they have been pushed for their fuel efficiency and possible low CO2 emissions. Now people are waking up slowly to the downsides of much higher NOx and particulate emissions, especially with this latest scandal, things are looking... interesting.

Only a minor pedge break, I really, really want a DD-500. I will only buy it if I somehow sell enough pedz.

Regarding pedge, my parents and my brother asked me what I want for christmas, knowing I like pedals and stuff. I figured Copilot Robotum and Digitech PDS-1002 would be neat gifts that don't break the bank, but just putting it out here in case Satan has similar plans. Give me a sign, and I'll wish for something else. Like dildos. My parents love buying me dildos. Probably.
