Crackling Footswitch

So, I just got this mystery chorus from theavondon, but I'm noticing that when I click to engage it, I get a rather loud popping and crackling. Now, I removed the footswitch cover, which I suppose is Boss style and it alleviates the crackle, but it's still there every once and a while. The crackling gets quite bad when I attempt to put the footswitch screws back in.

Anyone have any ideas? Would a picture help?

Picture of the guts would help. My guess is grounding issue.

Would having a battery in as well as having a power supply headed into it cause something like that?

EDIT: ok, so I pulled up the board to check it out just in case, and it looks like there is a wire loose. any ideas where that loose red wire should go? It appears attached to the yellow wire, which is attached to the power connector.

Need picture focused on power jack. Also, might try covering that metal plate above the jacks.

well I'm just guessing that it takes a standard boss power supply. the disconnected wire is probably a ground for something or just to connect the audio ground to the power negative. it really depends on where that black wire connects. power negative and audio ground may already be connected on the pcb. in that case, the red wire is most likely a ground for one of the pots. with all that insulation stripped off and the plastic box, me thinks it was wrapped around a pot shaft.

The black wire goes to the battery, apparently?

yeah thats normal. its negative ground so your negative battery and your negative wall power all get connected together with the jack sleeves and the circuit ground/negative rail. the red wires are switched when the power plug is inserted. thats what keeps batteries from exploding. the black wire is not switched cause the red wire is switched. I dont think I could trouble shoot it without tracing all the power and stuff. too many things could be happening. does it pass a signal at all? are there any loose nuts and bolts? that wire may have been connected to one of those screws you took out.
