That is far too true. Plus, I work at a pizza place, and the evil reaction I have towards people that order too many toppings is normally reserved for Dirty Projectors fans.

I need to watch Wayne's World now.
and I don't know and/or haven't heard 90% of these bands... I am pretty proud to say that, too.

I sadly can say that, due to being in an indie band, I know 95% of those bands.

I could probably write an essay about this.
Scenes are pretty closed over here and people don't seem to experiment much. There is basically no friction, everybody stays with their own, confined spaces/subscenes.
Basically Cologne is still living off the "sound of cologne" / minimal techno explosion from the early 00's. Kompakt records is a big player, even though stuff is far from minimal nowadays. These guys are pretty awesome as people and band:
ComaThen there is lots of bands trying to be the next big thing ripping off either Interpol/Editors or the Strokes. When you get lucky then there's a dash of electro, punk or glam in there. Yuck for the most time. Basically most musicians that play lots of shows over here are looking for the breakthrough and try to earn money doing what they like. That's no crime, but most of the time that means that what they like seems to be contrary to what I like.
Some examples:
http://www.myspace.com/voltairegermanyhttp://www.powertopeter.com/Some of these guys are friends and awesome people. But I just don't get the idea of making it big. Why?
There seems to be a cool grindcore scene with these bands:
http://www.daskrill.org/http://www.japanischekampfhoerspiele.de/But even though I enjoy listening to this shit sometimes, the people that hang out there are more streetpunks and the like. And I just can't stand stinking people that are drunk and piss everywhere. Sorry.
Creating noisy soundscapes seems to be a pretty lonely endeavour over here.

if any of you move to long island, we'll start an experimental shoegaze-meets-house-via-post-metal band and scare the perms outta these kids

I can even more sadly say that I know at least that many and fall into several of those stereotypes...

I fit in exactly with these ones,
Fleet Foxes
Hopelessly patchy beard growers.
TV On The Radio
Politically-correct hipsters.
Arcade Fire
Frequent transcendental experience havers.
Deerhunter
Avid doodlers.
Modest Mouse
People who expressed legitimate concern regarding the state of humanity when J.D. Salinger died.
