Welcome back :joy:
Totally...sometimes you just need to walk away for a week or a decade.
Ahmen! I mean I did quit music three times with five year breaks in between

yeah, I stopped for about 7 years when I had kids. I replaced music with alcoholism. But the fun kind...ya know, the craft beer "hobby"

Not currently on a hiring committee, and I’m pretty sure not everyone thinks this through the way I do, but I recommend against putting “craft beer” as a hobby or interest on a resume. Just my little public service announcement.

Agree and disagree. I was at a leadership summit during my hey day of the craft beer hobby and I put a picture on a slide about me from a recent beer tasting event that had this giant vertical of like every year of a certain hard to get beer that I shared with a bunch of other friends. It ended up being a very memorable thing at the summit and lead to many conversations that ultimately lead to new opportunities. One could say that it may have gotten attention because I was calling out drinking as a hobby and one could also say that I would have made those connections without exposing that hobby at this event, but it ended up being a great conversation starter for people to approach me.

But yeah...I'd never do that today...but then again, there are quite a few things that were totally cool about a decade ago that simply wouldn't fly today.

Well, you went into what could be a valid exception. Leadership, public speaking, management skills, expertise in a skill set that could be applied to the job in question, yeah, think about it. But from someone currently in college or professional school the extent of whose hobby is focused just on consumption, even with some discernment and learning, it is likely to come off like it did in this interview:

Amazingly, he still got the job, but one shouldn’t assume that’s normal.

HAHA....I remember that!

agreed. I think it was also the timing. It was around the timing that the craft beer hobby was dancing on the line of being classy vs a bad coverup for alcoholism. I wouldn't trade those half memories for much, except perhaps...if I could reverse the damages to my health that occurred from a decade of drinking myself silly. Wild what used to pass as not only acceptable, but almost cute.

It's hard to post here. The site loads slowly (sometimes very slowly). I usually get logged out when I hit the "submit" button to post. I have to keep logging in over and over, until it finally posts my message. This is still a great website but technical issues might be driving some people away.

Pro tip, copy your message before hitting submit, so that if you get logged out, you don't have to retype everything, you can just paste it and keep trying until it works.
