One thing that bugged me was in the “Techniques” or “Learning” forum, people would advise the importance to fret the notes with your fingertips (not the flat part of your fingers). That was supposed to be ‘cleaner’ or something. Your fingertips don’t matter, you can fret with your thumb and it sounds the same, because the frets make the note, not your finger. You could use the palm of your hand, it doesn’t matter. Maybe if you’re a progressive tapper trying to increase your BPM from 180 to 190, and looking for every small mechanical advantage? I never tried to contradict this information because the people saying that were sometimes teachers (also talking about music theory etc) and I figured they were probably better musicians than me. But that’s wrong, and it makes playing the bass a lot harder than it needs to be. If you’re successfully fretting the notes you need to fret, it doesn’t matter how you do it. I guess if you were a beginner it might be okay to hear this information early on (and discard it later when you can actually play). Maybe it’s important for fretless bass but that was never part of the discussion.

I was always told (and it's the same thing for playing brass instruments like tuba) that it's more to do with speed and arthritis prevention. It's not so much about the flatness on the strings as it is getting a nice relaxed C shape out of your hand. If you go flat finger, it's tensing the finger up more which slows it down, leads to arthritis, and other interesting side note, will release cortisol in your brain (anxiety) whereas doing the tips of the fingers keeps it all loosy goosy.
But I have tiny hands and bite my nails down til the bleed....so I flat finger it....so what the fuck do I know. And yeah, those guys would all go up in the FX threads and be like "work on your finger technique". Which brings up funny images of old lawyer types trying to create flanger sounds with their finger techniques.

They seem to sound pretty rad. I get a pretty similar vibe to them as Aguilar from a few years ago (which is also a positive). Pretty 'punchy' and 'modern' with I guess the DG being more 'metal' if you want to get into wanky advertising descriptions.
The Microtubes amp looks pretty lit as well. Too bad no one needs amps anymore

Blackened .... my pants.
I am a huge fan of the Darkglass Element, its the perfect brain for my pedal board and allowed me to get back into collecting and fucking with sounds. The other items are ......just not for me, I know that Adam whats his face seems to be the coolest bass player on the block and everyone that is modern in metal has the knee pads on for him and Darkglass. Something is not hitting me right with the distortions and the rest of their products.
I do have to say the class D am is cool and would be on a short list for me to buy if I currently needed one.
I dont know am I wrong?

I uh, don't know if "bass player in the platonic ideal of a guitar wank band" is for me, but lots of people (including some people I know and respect!) dig Periphery, so.
I have been getting back into "ye olde metal bass" and my tone is a bit boutiquified but ultimately it's still some kind of 250>some kind of high gain box of fuzz. Gotta find what works for you and all that stuff.

This is why I fucking love the MBD2 - I am so glad I pulled the trigger on this box early, it nails the blown super sludgy distortion sound that is not a straight up fuzz. I guess you nailed it on the head that for what darkglass is, is really not my bag when it comes to heavy music.
I am still in wanky 80's thrash metal, with some Pantera thrown in the mix.

i don't know SHIT about...
a) modern bass players
b) modern styles
c) modern gear
i'm operating on what tidbits i can remember from gigging out like... 5 years ago? feels like decades. but fuck me. 2020 felt like 12 years.
i remember loving Rusty Box as my basic tone into a power amp, Darkglass (whichever was the no eq dirt pedal that they originally made) for dirt, 2 or 3 fuzzes that were neat. that i think i still have.
oh. and Brian's SS/BS shizz being the BEST STUFF EVAH.

Mmmmmmm....blackened....I used to have a Mesa 400+. So good. My best sounding rig. It just got too heavy ince the kids were born (the most TalkBass thing I've ever said).
Darkglass is also weird to me. There's so much I love about their sounds but then there is this weird quality to them that sound.....fake? Not real? Like....thin somehow? It's ineffable.

you should plug your bass in to that fancy euro beep beep rack and then record it
because it would be cool
just sayin

I think the mids are weird with darkglass. Because of corona my band is just demoing shit digitally, sending stuff back and forth. THe bassist uses a lot of darkglass and I spend a lot of time eqing the mids to get them to a)exist and b)sit right.
