Lol don't try that at my place! Knob and tube wiring ftw! Every once in a while I get bit by accidentally becoming the ground.
Can't wait to get home and listen to some of what was just posted. I can lurk at work but if a want to post I have to use the phone and youtube is blocked

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I've been curious about Verellen amps since I first found them in 2009. They were really cheap back then as well. But the few demos on Youtube didn't impress me that much. They sounded good, but not really my kind of good, ya know? But I never stopped pining for one. It would be awesome if someone from the UK bought one and let me try it out. I just can't drop that kind of money on something I don't know I'll like.ridingeternity wrote:DUDE you are the guy with the Annunaki?(is there more than one?) Idk what it is ben does with his tube pre's...but the character of the distortion is just amazing...thinking about grabbing a Skyhammer pre myself so I can still sound somewhat similar if I get myself into backline situations.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
question, probably for nick: last night i tried out a v4. it's been looked at by a competent tech. i actually got it from my tech's shop. he's done some work on it and is trying to help the owner sell it. he let me take it to practice to try it out. it was awesome. sounded really really good and was loud as shit. we played for an hourish, maybe a little less, then took a few minute break (i'm in a band with smokers). when we came back in and i walked up to the amp, i noticed that somewhat distinct smell of really hot electrical things. i played for a second. amp still sounded great, but when i put my hand on the faceplate, i noticed it was really hot, mostly over on the side with the power switches. seemed unusual, so i turned it off and switched to my jmp which i just got back from getting a retube and a couple of other odds and ends.
so what's up with that heat? seems like i shouldn't buy this one, right? that's not normal for a v4, right? what could it be? i guess it could be a lot of things, but it was weird and i stopped using it 'cause i really don't want to blow up an amp that's not mine.

Not sure why it would be warm at the power switch. Something over there would have to have been generating heat like some component dissipating a lot of power. I wouldt think the power tubes could heat that location since its far enough away from them. Sounds like the PT could have become very hot and was spreading heat over to that area of the faceplate. Could be pulling 2 much current from it, causing it to heat up. Not sure why tho. Does not sound normal.

Looks like a pretty cool project. If he takes my trade bait, that'd be even cooler.

My amp tech said basically the same thing when he retubed my redbear. went on for a good half an hour about Soviet electronics.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Those Vox pickups are CoAxe, which basically means they can mimic traditional single-coils (Tele, Strat), P90's, and humbuckers, at least on the more expensive models. They're almost totally hum-cancelling and use ceramic magnets rather than the alnico you normally see in pickups. They have two blades and the traditional slugs that look like a bog standard P90, and they can be tapped and wired in different ways to procure the three (or two) different variations in tone. They're mounted in the same way with the centre screws that recess into the pickup cavity, so you can probably replace them with a set of Wolfetone Meanest P90s and be happy. The Series 33 only has less features, such as only two modes per pickup, no binding, etc.ryan summit wrote:and hey whats up with those vox pickups
