Obviously your approach was different from the rest of ours and I don't know if your tracks got used more than everyone else's but they are certainly noticeable. Next year, for the source tracks, I'm going to do more field recordings and try to do more uneffected and perhaps a little lengthier and composed stuff, maybe? Or I may say sod it and revert back to form, haha.

That track of yours that you are talking about was the first thing I played. I immediately put Valhalla UberMod on it, turning Shape down to -100% to see what it would sound like with reverse and it sounded great. I also put Goodhertz Wow Control on it, to lofi it a little. I carried on messing with all the tracks from everyone and realizing that I liked bits of everything I had done with all the of them, I set about to use them all, even if for just a moment, as my CPU would allow, and I pushed the computer to the edge of breaking to do it

So it may not be noticeable with all the effects but every one of the source tracks is in there. Thanks again everyone, that was fun (I know. I keep saying that but it was, looking forward to next year!)

That's very kind of you to say so! I think we need to play something slower next time... I've tried explaining (and playing) ambient music to my son but he still plays whatever goes on in his head, and it's usually so good that I end up trying to play along... and the ambient idea kind of goes out the window! We'll work on it; at his age I probably would never have listened to anything slow either! Thanks for the description of what you did to the tracks - I assumed you'd put them through something expensive like a Strymon or some sort of synthesiser! I will have to bear those plugins some thought, they do sound amazing. What sort of software do you use these inside? I've been starting to use Reaper because I find it's MIDI editing controls much easier to use than the ones in Ableton Live Lite which I also have, although I don't find the interface very intuitive (yet). Most of our sound editing is done in Adobe Audition because I get it for free (licence from work for Adobe software) and I find it really easy to layer sounds, add effects and most of all edit out all the glitches I make when I record!

I use Reaper and have a couple of the Valhalla plugins, in fact I used the delay on a couple of tracks of my song. I definitely find the interface easy now I've been using it for years.

I think it's cool that your son is enjoying himself playing music with you at all, very lovely that you're getting him involved in creativity and experimenting :thumb:

Thanks! It's great because neither of us know anyone locally that likes creating music (well music that we enjoy; neither of us like anything normal!) so we play together which is great because I can't really bond with him over videogames (I've not enjoyed them for years) and his other passion is gardening which I find rather dull... I do wish I had his talent and speed and just instant comprehension for what notes work with others... I know it gets harder to learn new skills at you get older, and when I was his age I really wanted to be a great guitar player but lets be honest I sucked and it annoyed me how bad I was so I gave up and didn't play for 25 years! And now it feels like my fingers move through thick treacle when I play, whereas his are so fluid and can stretch to frets that I can't reach at all. I do wish I had some of that time back again!

I have some other Reaper questions, but I'll put them in the Tech and Recording section tomorrow if I can't figure them out before.

I was using Reaper too for this track. I have Ableton and Cakewalk too, and have recently dived into Bitwig and Gig Performer, while trying to search for something that will allow me to work the way I want. Need to finish setting it up but my initial explorations with Gig Performer as a live-performance DAW are very promising.

Can't really go wrong with Reaper as a recording/mixing DAW. A license is relatively inexpensive and there are so many things it can do because of its adaptability and the amazing user community that has leaned into it.

And plus +1 on what coldbrightsunlight said: I thought your son did great and it is wonderful that he is being setup for a lifetime of creative exploration. If I had not discovered it, my life would not be near as rewarding as it is. So that is awesome that you have helped him find that.

If I know the answers, I'll be happy to relate any Reaper/DAW information I might know. I don't have comprehensive knowledge but have been using DAWs for well over a couple decades.

I picked this up on bandcamp a couple weeks ago and have been enjoying all the tracks! this track 'delusional' is pretty hypnotic!
i'm sorry i couldn't be involved all the way through but was happy to at least get started with some samples/stems for the project....been working two jobs since september so i've barely had time to even play. i hope that next time around i can participate from start to finish!

Any chance this might happen again this year?

A good question! It had passed through my mind while I was out walking the other day but had faded by the time I was back near my computer. I'd be down, I guess I should start a new thread to try and get people's attention.
