New Mastodon is..well, new Mastodon. Lots of good riffs, lots of annoying vocal lines  -- but definitely less than in the latest ones.
Possibly their best effort since Crack the Skye? has at least 4 tracks that are very, very good (More Than i Could Chew, Dagger, Had it All, Eyes of Serpents).

Yeah the first EP was better and such blah blah blah

Just came here to post about new Mastodon. Not a fan. Some good riffs and ideas, and some entire songs are OK, drums sound great. It's rarely bad, entirely competent etc. But ultimately it's just not very interesting to me. Really don't like how the vocals sound, or most of the melody/lyrics. :idk: I was already done expecting much from them so it's OK, but I still live in hope I guess.

Today I'm going to attempt to solider through the entire album rather than quitting halfway through! Most of the good songs you mentioned Dowi I didn't even make it to on attempt 1  it seems unnecessarily long when I don't love the material.

Well, you said it in different words but I think we're more or less on the same page.
I had zero expectations too but I always listen to their stuff the day it comes out because, after all, deep inside i will always be a fan of them no matter what.

Those songs i pointed out in the previous post are more on the "doomy" side, and i think they succeeded in making them work without sounding bland or boring.

As i love the riffs more than i hate some of the melodies, yesterday afternoon i gave it a second spin and enjoyed some songs more than the first time  :idk:

haha yeah I also picked up on more things I liked second time round, though it's never going to be a keeper for me I don't think.

Enjoying the new Cradle of Filth today, good fun.

These have already been released but it was a pleasant surprise to jump back into the bathing pool that is Sunburned Hand of the Man and discover they have ~5 "new" albums, new in quotes because some of them are archives from 20 years ago, one's a live collection, and so on.

But there are two actual new records! Few bands do it better when you're in the mood for weird sprawl (which is one of my defacto modes).

I feel like this is a throw back thread with you guys talking about Mastodon and Cradle of filth having new albums. I guess I'm way outta the loop or maybe the loop as circled around again and I didn't notice. If that is the case, I can yo-yo like a motherfucker, lets do this.

It is not impossible that we've discussed CoF. And Mastodon disappointment.

Disappointment would lead me to think that there was hype for these releases and that is why I suggested a throw back because I didn't realize they were still relevant. My bad.

The last few Cradle albums have been killer, so I'm hype for the new one. Halfway through now (it is long as shit) and it's pretty great. But I dunno, CoF is pretty over the hill in terms of the hype train.

Mastodon - I'm always excited because the first two albums were just so good, and seeing them live in 2005 was one of the best things I've ever seen. And there is always something to get my hopes up for the new album. But I dunno if folks are still hype on them. :idk:

Definitely not trying to be a jerk because I kinda feel like that right now. So I won't really say much more on that but I will agree that the first 2 albums by Mastodon were good stuff, I guess I'm just quick to jump off the bandwagon.

I don't think i ever got through more than 3 tracks in a row from Cof. :surprise:
That being said, i think you're right, i'm quite convinced we had a similar discussion about Mastodon some time ago.

New Clinic and new Deerhoof are both good! Which is also something I might have said ten years ago.

OOo Deerhoof is out finally? Good stuff. Pre-ordered that ages ago

And I mean, I think i've had this conversation about Mastodon for the last 3 albums (and that's only because I didn't get into them before that). Those first two are so good I keep the flame of stupid hope alive in my heart

Test Hammer of the Witches. It's not like the first few albums of screechy black metal fun. It's just like thrashing good heavy metal.
