Sennheiser MD421 is the best dynamic mic on the market

Postby Woolworm » Wed Apr 08, 2020 4:10 pm

Okay theres probably some ridiculous expensive ones that I haven't heard about, but in terms of not money gimmicking, still haven't heard a better dynamic mic. Hi-fi to the nth degree. SM7B absolute trash. RE20 is good but dull. Audix i5 has the hi-fi sound but too much colorization, everything sounds gnarlier and not in a better way. SM57 I've always liked, no colorization but so dull. Very similar thoughts on the SM57 as the RE20. And on the Sennheiser 441, I haven't tried one, but looking at some comparison videos, its better for bass, but anything else, the 421 is easily better. So why would you spend twice the price for one.

I mean GUYS, it looks like shit, I hate how the capsule is top of the rectangular shape, but in terms of the mic, I dont understand why the RE20 has so many fanboys. Just go listen to any comparison vid on youtube and you will see.

Coles 4038 is a damn fine mic, but it's not a dynamic mic.
The MD421 is a great allround mic, but personaly I would go for a Heil Sound PR40 as a desert Island dynamic mic.

What do you like about the 421? I find that moving coil dynamics always sound so flat and really lack detail, but I've never used a 421.

Which is why I tend to favour ribbons (which are also dynamic).

I agree, the 421 is really nice. I prefer the Beyer M88, but that's just personal preference.

Sennheiser made a 422 for a while which was similar, but with what I remember as being a better mount.

i too love this mic, I find it is very in your face and punchy across the frequency spectrum. It gives a great aggressive dynamic coloration to a lot of sources. Great on e guitar, toms, trombone, loud vocals.

That mic clip is a practical joke though, you Only have to graze the release trigger and gravity pulls that heavy voice coil straight to the floor. can’t tell you how many of these I’ve seen with smashed in grilles.

I like how people treat SM57's and 58's like nothing. Perfect ripe for stealing. And any XLR to jack. Such a petty steal but fuck it.

I actually just bought an MD 422 that I found on ebay for 140 quid, 100 quid cheaper than the current in print MD 421. SUEPR STOKED!!! And from what I heard, the 422 was specifically supposed to be made for guitar cabs? If thats true, than my fave dynamic just got even more dynamic.

I think the M88 is very good sounding. The super tight polar pattern might a little too tight for me.

I believe I'm most partial to Senn 906 for dynamic mic, the Telefunken M80 is my go-to for female vocals and general purpose though.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

The 906's big thing is the built-in filter/EQ hump switch - it's a LITTLE clearer than the 906 as far as picking up some room air.

Similar to the SM-57 versus some of the upscale Shure versions.

I got the 906 when it was dirt cheap during a Sweetwater promo ($30 more than a 609) with the ridiculous payment plan with 0% interest.

$3 a month? Won't even notice!

Last band recording, used a PR40 and MD421 on the bass cab with a direct out. Ev're'thang'w'neeed.
There is a 500 character limit.
