what's the difference between the Filter control on the older model and the treble + bass controls on the newer ones?

Old style is just pre-'verb bass cut

Actually, the older version's Filter control was "inside" the reverb just like the EQ knobs on the newer version. So what was called "Filter" on the old ones is exactly the same as the "Bass" control on the new one. It's just the Treble knob which is added, and it allows you to cut treble to make "darker" or "warmer" reverb sounds.
