I probably would've bought a 1940s lap steel, but there aren't too many that come up for sale in purple. :idk:

So, the Melbert is what I got.

Here's another Melbert that recently got listed:

I think that one's more typical of the Melbert style (more pedal steel-inspired).

It's got the same slightly awkward control plate though. :whateva: (Vintage lap steel controls aren't any better placed. So, that's a draw in that department.)

My Melbert isn't too bad though. I bought a Gemini Suprocaster pickup to replace the (stock?) Select by EMG. Eventually I'll probably replace the jack and the nut. (They both seem a little flimsy.) Otherwise, no complaints.

Anyone got experience of using benders on a lap steel. I can see from a while ago Zork had the Certano ones. Anyone else? Planning a project to make my own and use a Certano or Duesenberg (TBC). I really crave those classic pedal steel sounds that are pretty much my favourite sound ever, and what I try to learn to emulate. The worry is losing the ability to mute effectively since the bars are in the way. I know it's never going to be as fluid as a pedal steel because it's a compromise but living in the UK a pedal steel is a pipe dream!!! (one day though...)
