I don't think I could name just ONE, as my favourite. I can tell you the most important band in my lifetime:

Oasis.

If it wasn't for Noel Gallagher, I'd probably have never picked up a guitar, and might still be listening to the Spice Girls...

A couple mentioned already make my short list (Oasis and RHCP), but I have to say that my favorite band is probably Radiohead. I can be in any mood and find a song of theirs that I want to listen to. My "desert island" album is In Rainbows, especially if you include the second disc. Reckoner is the Blackbird of the 21st century; it is incredibly simple, but it is one of the most beautiful pieces of music of all time. If I'm angry I put on Myxomatosis from Hail to the Thief. High and Dry when I'm sad. OK Computer when I'm rockin. So yeah, I really like Radiohead.

I'd have to go with Tool, just because they impacted me on an emotional level that I've never felt with any other band. I don't listen to them more than a few times a year these days though.

There are approximately 9857249856 second place acts, which ebb and flow with any given mood. Neurosis, Miles Davis, Swans, Danzig, Ulver, Kyuss, etc.

Yeah, it is really hard to nail down one, but it would probably be Tool with me. Second place would be a tie between Pink Floyd, Mars Volta, and Radiohead.

In all seriousness: The Beatles
They played every kind of music that I listen to, and they experimented in ways that very nearly gave birth to modern alternative music (noise rock, prog-rock, ska, etc.). I don't listen to them very much anymore, maybe two or three times a year, but every time I put them on my mind is blown. Because with every new artist I discover, I find more and more similarities to The Beatles's spirit, style and sound.

Very good question. Off the top of my head I'd go with... Bauhaus. In fact, I think I'll go put some Bauhaus on my iPod right now...

Futuresailors - OMG: ROCKETSHIP! I forgot how great they are!

But as for a FAVORITE, that's a tough one to nail down, and completely context dependent. The answer careens between The Who, Screaming Trees, Metallica (pre-Load, please), Yo La Tengo and Fugazi.

Hm.

The more I think about that one, the less I know the answer.
