Just in general, though, participating in the community and its discussion would be a start. Also, taking somewhat of a backseat, so you don't overpower others' voices. I dunno...it depends what kind of community you want to have and whether you want to be a dictator or participant.

It'd still help to know what kind of community you're talking about--who's the "you" and who's the "community"?

I was chatting up some musicians this last weekend.. one guy kept talking about 'building community' when it was obvious he just wanted an audience for his own personal songwriting platform.
but i can parallel the situation to others and the context is very generalized. it seems to happen in lots of mediums too.
I was just at a loss to explain to him how faulted the explanation of his intended approach was (without being rude)

but can the definition of a community involve a dictator?

I actually went to school for English Lit and Philosophy, so these types of questions just interest me.

I guess to super-simplify things, I would say an audience is a group that you present to without any expectations or desire for feedback or interaction, whereas a community is a group that shares feedback and ideas with the intention of growth rather than personal gain. Ask him if he's just looking to play his stuff to people or genuinely interested in your (the "community) opinions.

Everyone within earshot is your audience, the people who care about you and you care about are your community.
