I'm a huge fan and am gutted. When I heard he got kicked out of the band a few months ago, I kept googling him routinely because I was afraid he would spiral and do something self-destructive (I know that's parasocial and weird; I don't know him at all. What can I say, I'm a big softy). This news still hit like a gut punch. Tragic, senseless, and awful.

I'm a huge fan of Mastodon and it definitely hit hard to have it happen the way it did without getting to reconcile while everyone was alive. I feel bad for them cause when I first heard he died, I thought it was gonna be an OD... and being hit by a car just makes it that much worse.

as i’ve read various posts and comments the whole story is terribly grim. i gather that the rest of the group left Brent because he was a severely disruptive alcoholic. i know what it’s like to deal with dear friends who have no off button when plastered and eventually it becomes unbearable. they wanted him to go to rehab, but 🎼 he said no, no, no 🎶. the rest was sadly all too predictable. alcohol is the worst drug, which of course is why it’s the only legal one in the West.

Yeah, when I got the news I automatically assumed he was DUI, it was a surprise to me that the other driver was at fault. From what I understand, he also was openly uncomfortable with how big the band got and hated touring, which I'm sure made work very difficult for everyone involved. I was really hoping this would be a positive turning point for him, he'd get sober and focus on his personal projects and maybe even reunite with Mastodon if/when he felt ready. Life is fragile, and short, and weird.

Time for me to fail at learning the bridge to Capillarian Crest for the umpteenth time.
