Music Goals 2019

Moving this year’s goals thread into General Discussion since it seemed more appropriate.

This is a thread about what you'd like to achieve and how you'd like to grow as a musician in 2019.

My big goal at the moment is to get excited about writing songs again. I didn’t release any new music last year (a reprieve from having put out 3 records in 2017), but I’d really like to release at least an EP in 2019. But I’ve been feeling for a long time like I have nothing to say, that my songs are embarrassing, etc. Not sure how I’m going to move past this obstacle yet and welcome suggestions.

I’m going to continue my progress from last year studying music theory and reinforcing my patchy foundational skills on guitar. I still have a ways to go in my fretboard mastery workbook. It’s going slowly but I’m feeling more P O W E R F U L

well, to reiterate, the biggest thing i need to do is write, which is the most difficult thing as well. beyond that, i need to put together a semi-permanent board with an isolated power supply; i had to tear up the old board cos it was too noisy with daisy chains, and practice at least once in awhile. i've been in a disinterested-in-playing period lately. ideally i'll also get the MacBook fixed and loaded with Logic Pro X and do some recording. at least i'd like to finish the reggae version of "Novelty" by Joy Division i've had in the can for several years now. there are a few things i'd like to get in the realm of effects, but nothing i really NEED other than one of those old Yamaha 500 half-rack units like Christian used to use in Slowdive. i've pretty much given up on trying to find other musicians because there apparently no living players over 60 who want to do mutant shoegaze, but if i get far enough along one of my coworkers is a terrific drummer who i might get to do drum dubs. otherwise, i can program drums well enough that you might not be able to tell they're programmed.

Release an EP and finish writing an album with my band. Fingers crossed we find a solid drummer too.

I'm going to mostly carry on doing what I did last year, making strange noises and putting them up on YouTube.

I deleted all the raw wav files from last year so it all has to be recorded fresh and new, I've currently got two as opposed to the 100 or so I had by the end of the year.

I would like to make one or two more "musical" now and again, but on the whole I'm happy in my little corner of the big wide world of music making

Finally release our EP now that we're sick of the songs

Finish writing the full length.

Either A) Convince my drummer not to move to California in July
Or B) Start writing a whole new set of songs and hit the reset button on the band

Figure out how to sing and how to come up with a good vocal melody

Sell out

1) Find the missing puzzle piece that's currently blocking me from writing lyrics.
2) Finally settle on a final name for my current band.
3) Carefully work out some samples for our songs.
4) Start playing shows with this band.
5) Record our LP, which is well on its way to being written musically, but not lyrically.
6) Start a two-piece I've got ideas about.
7) Play more bass again.

Now that I have some room I'd like to finally get my amps working again and get a setup going.
Build the weird instrument I've been thinking about for a couple years now.

Just popping in to add the (unachievable?) goal of defeating Imposter Syndrome once and for all.

Possibly more complex than useful! And string-based, but not a guitar.
You'll see soon(ish?)...

1. Play out once per month whether it be a solo show, band project (if I can get one together), or open mic

2. Record and post one song per month

I want to integrate my guitar setup with my synth setup and start making actual music again with it instead of mostly messing around

Finish my fucking album that's been in the works since April. Should have two singles out soon.
