hate > love: change my mind

theses:

1. love is a weakness, hatred makes you strong. love is a vulnerability, a danger, a chink in the armor; hatred IS your armor.

2. love is weak, hatred is powerful. love can only build small things like families that are easily destroyed; hatred destroyed the Valois, slavery, the Romanoffs, and Nazi Germany. Bono sings that "love is bigger than anything in its way," but love was not bigger than Genghis Khan, the Holocaust, the gulags, or the guy with the bone saw.

3. love is dishonest, hatred is true. people will tell you they love you to gain your genitalia, your money, your attention, or your time; nobody will ever tell you they hate you for fun or personal gain.

4. love is temporal, hatred is eternal. love always ends, whether by boredom, betrayal, incapacity, or death; the Irish will hate the Brits for the next 1000 years.

change my mind. watch this space, as more theses may drop.

yes, my cynicism is curdling into nihilism, or existentialism at least. between that, the seasonal depression, and my self-starvation i'd be a bit worried about myself if i still cared.

The best things in life are fleeting. Love might hurt more often than not, but hate is just as insincere. Indifference is the true opposite of love. Don't base your persona on fleeting concepts.

(Yes, I'm starting a business selling those annoying "paintings" with moral quotes on them.)

well, everything is fleeting, innit? other than pain, which is eternal.

I had a girlfriend who would say "hate isn't stronger than love, it's just louder." She was kind of a bitch though.

Hate is exhausting. Anger is exhausting. You can only get so far before you run out of fuel on those two. Eventually hatred is spent and then that's it. I think, as an individual, you can motivate yourself more sustainably with love in your fuel tank.

Love and hate both take effort. Now apathy and indifference, that's where it's at.

That's not a very metal response...

In my experience, it's the opposite. Loneliness/misanthropy has only made me afraid to do things I actually want to do.

I guess, but those aren't good things even if they're powerful on their own terms. Your measurements of "<" are cherry picked.

This is definitely not true.

Eternal is what sense? Historically and culturally prolonged, perhaps, but not necessarily on an individual level.

To be perfectly honest you sound a bit like you're depressed and only seing the world through that filter.

well, i don't think i've ever not been depressed. but my observations are also based on a lifetime of experience. everyone i ever cared about has fucked me over in the end excepting one person i've known since we were 14, and i'm 62 now so i think i have a pretty good database on these questions. in fact, i'll go even deeper and say that "love" really means "you're OK as long as you do what i think you should do." i doubt i'll ever be in another relationship because what you get in return is never worth the price you pay...i have no further interest in having my life dictated by someone who is primarily motivated by their own interests with the implicit thteat of abandonment, and will not deal with anyone if it's not 100% on my terms. take me as i am or leave me be. sadly, i've never seen a relationship that's based on mutual acceptance...they always expect you to adapt to them. fuck that. i don't have much time left and will bloody well have things my way for the remaining years. better to be alone than to sacrifice your soul to make someone else happy when they'll knife you in a second if you truly disagree. now it's going to be MY way or the highway, and i'm totally comfortable with that. which is not to say i'm happy about it, but i get to come first sometime.

Oh, wait, you're being serious? I mean, I sort of doubt that because you seem like a nice dude who cares about stuff, but to keep with the thread:
dubkitty wrote:hatred destroyed the Valois, slavery, the Romanoffs, and Nazi Germany. Bono sings that "love is bigger than anything in its way," but love was not bigger than Genghis Khan, the Holocaust, the gulags, or the guy with the bone saw.
This does not sound like hate. This sounds like passion, nationalism, ideology, the (wrong) belief in something. Genghis Khan or Hitler didn't do what they did because of pure hate in my opinion. Give a clear definition of what you believe hate is if you think otherwise.

Also,
dubkitty wrote:i have no further interest in having my life dictated by someone who is primarily motivated by their own interests with the implicit thteat of abandonment, and will not deal with anyone if it's not 100% on my terms. take me as i am or leave me be.

[snip]

i don't have much time left and will bloody well have things my way for the remaining years.
I'll be gentle here because I obviously can't fathom the stuff you've been through, but aren't these sentences slightly contradictory? You don't want anybody to dictate your life, but you want to dictate theirs?

I might be missing the sarcasm I thought I saw when I first replied, so sorry if this makes me seem preachy or douchey (I am in fact a preachy douche, but we'll leave that for the thread I'll make in thirty years). I believe in a thing called love, just listen to the rhythm of my heart etc.
