As a kid of the 70s / 80s - I liked watching all the dopey comedy and stuffed bras on Hee Haw, but only later after I picked up guitar did I truly figure out what a badass Roy Clark was.

there was a point in the late 60s when the toob was full of bad-ass country picking. along with Roy, Hee Haw also featured Don Rich playing with Buck Owens; there was the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour with John Hartford in the house band, and The Johnny Cash Show. of course, you'd have to suffer through some ungodly comedy sketches before you got any music after the show opener, but that's what life was like when there were only three TV channels.

holy crap, i sound like grandpa :wha?:

I remember being like 6 years old and knowing even then that Hee-Haw was cringe inducing...(save Buck Owens)

The 70s networks were full of cheesy variety hour live formats. They were all variants on Rowan & Martin's Laugh In - quick cuts to one liners, zoom takes, ensemble musical numbers, puppets, sketches, the whole deal - all shot with polarized lenses and animated wipes and double camera composites. Even kids shows did the format on Saturday mornings.

Hee Haw
The Donny & Marie Show
Solid Gold
The Mandrell Sisters Hour
Sonny & Cher
Glenn Campbell Goodtime Hour
Sha Na Na
The Richard Pryor Hour
even The Muppet Show is a send up of all of that.

And we watched all of it, because there was no cable and VCRs cost a million dollars.
