Man, I don't think a celebrity death has impacted me this much since Robin Williams, he lead such a good life and open me up to so many great food cultures with his amazing tone and openness.

Depression is underestimated. Please take care of yourselves, friends.

I'm legit bummed. I truly love Anthony Bourdain and always found his shows and writings fascinating. It's his fault I went from a dude scared to eat weird food to a dude willing to eat whatever just to try it.

“Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? Same. This one hurts big time. When I was learning to cook I very much identified with Mr. Bourdain's mantra of "all food and cooks/chefs are equal and should be treated with respect regardless of being made by a Michelin Starred chef or the line cook just working to pay the bills." His mindset of straying from the beaten path and immersing yourself wherever you go fed many a wanderlust and gave perspectives often overlooked by the generally spoiled Western public. Gonna crack some southeast Asian beer, swing by the local hole in the wall noodle shop for some takeout, and reread Kitchen Confidential in his honor tonight.

Did not realize I would be effected by his death, but I feel terribly sad and shocked. I've watched No Reservations and Parts Unknown each a couple times through and always appreciated the respect and dignity he freely gave people around the world in his work. I don't know any other celebrity chef that actively demurred from his self-importance while boosting everyday people the way he did.

Just awful news.

Hitting me harder than I would have expected.

I wasn't quite as much of a fuck-up as he was, nor was I quite as successful (even in the darkness he had a career and a CIA education) but there's a lot of hope in finding someone so basically human (and humane) who made it relatively late in life. Getting toward my late-30s without ever having some concept of 'a future,' there's a fear that it only gets worse from here but Bourdain's path, I'm realizing, gave me something to pull against that inertia.

May he prepare the most splendiferous feast Valhalla has ever witnessed!

Except, you know, his mental health is something he would openly talk about often. The suicide part was not that surprising past the initial shock of the news.

I've heard some absolutely ludicrous theories already. My advice would be to not seek them out unless you want to be further convinced of people's shockingly potent stupidity.

He was fantastic. I'll be bummed about this one for a good long while.
