It's from Lost Highway. Pretty much my favorite film, eva.
That's Robert Blake, real life psychopath.

this always struck me as an insane coincidence, although robert blake does not play the wife killer role in lost highway, it is basically a movie about bill pullmans character not being able to accept the fact that he killed his wife and blakes character is.... some sort of weird reminder he did it(???) (i was at your house, you let me in, etc etc, call me)
robert blake after (hiring people to?) shoot his wife while she sat in a car outside a restaurant employed similar levels of denial. although he did think his child was actually marlon brandos sons kids so it seems like he was living a pretty wild ride and teh lost highway role is probably only a coincidence. still crazy to me though.

Makes a bit more sense now, supposed to represent some kind of portion of personality of one of the lead characters? Were those two the same woman? Were all three the same woman?

A woman played the part, but I don't think the gender has any baring on it's meaning. There seems to be a theme of Gnosticism in Lynch's work. Basically a more mystical, cosmological and vague take on Christianity I guess. This figure in Mullholland Drive, the "Give me back my phone" guy in Lost Highway, the whole black lodge in Twin Peaks seems based on the idea of the
Demiurge. The guy in the restrauant who has the dream says "he's the one behind it all" or something like that.
Incidentally, I always felt like the Legend of Zelda games had a touch of this kind of malevolent force. Majora's Mask is like the Twin Peaks of the series.

I've re-read 'Catching The Big Fish' more than any other book. For the mystical characters, I would make the connection it has something to do with the 'Unified Field' that Lynch talks about in his Transcendental Meditation practice. He loves leaving stuff open to interpretation and film is not like a rubix cube that you solve so I guess it depends on the person? Who knows?
