Hey GurrrrL How Do You Like To Reproduuuuuuceeeee?

so like. in bands i've always been super hot the worrieds about if i do a neat thing, being able to do that neat thing AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN with totally reliable results because like. playing live.

now with home based thingers it mostly feels like if i can get all the permutations of an idea recorded down, don't care so much if i can't recreate EXACTLY the same thing.

but then i worry about needing to do a different arrangement at some point or record it differently for mixing or SOEMTHING.

and that's probably a bit anal retentive control issue silliness.

where do y'all fall whilst MAKING NOISES?

Previous bandmates have alerted me to this disabling condition as well.
One of my good friends always ends up in bands with me, he's kind of my sponsor for not fucking a riff up. He'll watch me play, listen to the variations, tell me which one was awesome as soon as i play it and then, because I'm incapable, he will play exactly what I just played back to me so I know what he's talking about and hit me if I deviate.
When its me, I just record everything, pick the most solid version to make the part and then keep an ear out for variants to drop in here and there.
Because you can't cook with just vanilla.

Bandmate: Could you play that again?

Me: No. What'd I just play?

This is why I need looper pedals, my brain shuts down after a point when I play. It's only awake enough to press record as soon as it notices something jammin'.

I have one recorded riff where I just don't have a clue how I made the sound at all. I can figure out the chords but the combination of pedals is completely magical and I don't know what I did.

OH WELL.

This is why I try to write things on clean instruments and add cool effects later if it sounds good. Transcribing a part I can't remember isn't too hard but a multi pedal combination? Might never manage

Vince Clarke has a similar method. He likes to have the melodies down before he even approaches a synthesizer.

Sometimes I wish I could just have the rest of my band to comp things on a loop just to get things exacto m'bacto.

Every note must be just right.

For modular specifically, I feel really good when I reset and build a patch from scratch again. Not having to make something repeatable is liberating for me. & The same patch can be played in so many different ways, so I don't see the need to stick to one interpretation. I'll def take note of things in a patch I enjoy and store them in my knowledge bank so I can implement then later. But then again, I'm all about improv/not making 100% repeatable results with this format so YMMV.

In trying to be super concise with actually writing something, recording has been indespensable. Especially recording the kernel of an idea that I can revisit and reference while trying to expand upon the idea. If a new bit/part is cool but doesn't fit with the original idea, I either shed it or make it it's own thing.

Nowadays I have no interest in recalling anything. I've been recording mostly destructively, not bothering to save patches or write down what I used or anything. It feels liberating and I can work a lot faster that way.

I have to stop recording little snippets of guitar riffs unless I'm recording them for real. I don't know what it is, but as soon as I put an idea down in voice memo, my brain decides it doesn't have to remember that part anymore, so it's a bitch to revisit and try to suss out.
