Hey, so I'm planning on flying out to see a friend of mine who lives in SF. I've never been out there before, and while I'm kind of interested in seeing the city, I'm more interested in seeing some nature and smaller places outside of the city to do some light recon to see if it's the kind of place I'd like to live. Am I fucked in this regard if I don't have a driver's license, or are there are busses and other ways to get around the area? What are some towns I should check out and places I should go?

Stay away from the homeless people.

Go to China Town, but be careful lol.

See the red woods (it's fucking awesome!)

Visit the pier. So cool and smelly, but still cool.

See some of the local musicians. There's really good ones.

Buy some local shit. Lots of cool stuff there.

Don't drop the soap

Drinking places I enjoyed in SF:
Mikkeller
Cellarmaker
Brewcade

Non-drinking places I enjoyed:
Asian arts museum
Modern arts museum

But more importantly:

TACOS

BART is a great way to get around the greater Bay Area. You can bop over into Berkeley or whatever where here will be a lot more trees. I'm not nearly as familiar with San Francisco as I wish I was. I only go there for specific reasons, mostly to visit a museum, music, or a baseball game. Going down for khemmis tonight! Woot!!

Yeah walt's right, no BART up here, but it's a decent medium town. Good food, small but pretty cool music and art scene, high cost of living but that's how everything is around here. I moved here to be with my wife, if I were moving for other reasons I would go closer to the city

....go to Toronado .... they have the FRESHEST pliny the elder .... best beer EVER. they get dibs over Russian River cause they helped them from going under or some bullshit.

If you're into beer at all, Cellarmaker is a MUST

I've only been once and it was before the tech bro thing really happened, but even then I had a super hard time finding locals... it's a very touristy town, and rightly so—it's probably the prettiest city I've been to in the states.

The last day I was there though, I found this place called Tommy's Joynt. Locals drinking beer, watching basketball. Lots of roasted meat. Though I can often be a fan of bougie things, it felt super nice to find somewhere that seemed a bit more old school. So I'll just throw that out there.

Also Japantown is rad. Kinokuniya Books.

And Jwar is right: the homeless people in SF mean business.

Prettiest maybe in landscape and architecture, I could agree with that. As far as environment goes though, I find it to be disgusting, dirty, and overall pretty fukkin gross.

Talk to homeless people
Stay away from China town
The red woods are meh
There are no good musicians
Take a long walk off a short pier
Buy imports.

walking tours I kinda take people on when visiting:

Market St/Union Square - some cool shops.

Embarcadero over to the Bay Bridge - nice picture opportunities

Fishermans Wharf/In N Out/Cable Car Turnaround/Maritime Museum/Aquatic Park Pier - Good pics back to the city.

Palace of Fine Arts then over to the Yacht Club/Wave Organ

Nob Hill - Top of the Mark @ Mark Hopkins - Tonga Room @ Fairmont - Grace Cathedral (im not religious but this place was amazing from an architectual standpoint, awesome stained glass.

Golden Gate Park - You can spend the whole day there. Japanese Tea Garden is great. Art museums, Windmills, Science Museum, Conservatory of Flowers and Bison. if you still have some walking in you go up to the Cliff House, Sutro Baths riuns, USS San Fran memorial and Legion of Honor.

If you have access to car Twin Peaks has good picture ops

Giants game - I am not a huge baseball fan but I love their stadium.

Coit Tower - pretty good views of city and good for pics

Chinatown - I love Hunans Home on Jackson.

Golden Gate Bridge - walking/biking on it ok. I prefer the two over looks on the north side.

Muir Woods - nice hikes
